BJP leaders discuss zero taxation idea, opinions divided

New Delhi: BJP top brass today discussed the idea of complete abolition of Income, Excise and Sales tax which has been floated by some of its leaders amid reports that it may be included in the party's vision document-2025 that is likely to be unveiled before the Lok Sabha polls.

A group which has been propounding this theory of zero taxation- abolition of Income, Sales and Excise tax on people- made a presentation at the residence of senior BJP leader L K Advani here.

BJP President Rajnath Singh, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley and former party chief Nitin Gadkari were among those present at the presentation.

Gadkari, who heads the committee that is preparing BJP's vision document, had earlier announced at a programme that BJP may go for complete abolition of Income, Sales and Excise tax on the people and instead apply around 1 or 1.5 per cent of expenditure or transaction tax, the country will get a revenue to the tune of around Rs 40,000 lakh crore.

However, former Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha has said this proposal is not feasible.

Other BJP leaders also have doubts about this idea and feel it is pro-rich but will affect the poor.
