AAP will not have any minister left after 3-4 months: Cong

New Delhi: Congress today ridiculed AAP and its government over a host of issues ranging from the rape of a Danish woman to the controversy surrounding a minister.

"They won't have any one (minister) left after two-three months," Congress spokesman Sandeep Dikshit told reporters when asked if Law Minister Somnath Bharti, indicted recently in a case of "tampering with evidence", should resign.

He said AAP had been in the habit of demanding resignations from others in the past at the slightest instance but was now "slightly confused", suggesting that there was difference in AAP's practice and performance.

On the issue of rape of a Danish woman in Delhi, he wondered as to how the Kejriwal government will deal with the serious matter as it was in the "Helpline and SMS decision mode".

At another point, Dikshit dubbed AAP as a "group of people with contradictory ideas". He said this when he was told that a JNU professor having controversial views on Kashmir has joined AAP.

Dikshit recalled that AAP leader Prashant Bhushan too has made contentious remarks on the Kashmir issue. Besides, he said that Medha Patkar, who holds dissimilar views on certain matters has also joined AAP.

New Delhi: To prepare the party's strategy for coming Lok Sabha polls, top BJP leaders from across the country will assemble here for a three-day brainstorming session from 17 January.

After top party leaders attend the day-long National Executive meeting, party workers from across the country are expected to attend the two-day National Council meeting at Ramlila maidan.

BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the three-day national executive and council meetings will discuss issues related to social, political, economic, national security and internal security.

"It will have a detailed discussion on the success of 'mission good governance' under the leadership of Narendra Modi in the coming Lok Sabha elections," he said.

The party will bring two resolutions - a political and an economic and an assessment of Congress-led UPA government's performance.

Sources said while the political resolution will focus on the "mis-governance" under UPA government hit by a series of scams and present itself as a strong alternative to the Congress at the Centre. It will also focus on neighbouring countries, foreign policy, internal security and corruption.

The economic resolution will focus on the "poor" state of the economy under UPA which has "hampered" growth and investment in the country.

While highlighting the "bad" policies and inflation under UPA that harmed the business community, farmers and the labour class, BJP will put forth its own vision to help India emerge as an economic power and restart the investment and growth cycle.

Naqvi said the National Executive meeting will begin at 11 am at NDMC Convention Centre and the National Council meeting will start at 10 am the next day and conclude on January 19 evening.

Congress reshuffles leaders in Madhya Pradesh ahead of elections

Bhopal: In its latest makeover the Congress has given expression to its disillusionment with the "Singhdom" in Madhya Pradesh.

The party appointed Arun Yadav as Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president on the eve of his 40th birthday. He is the youngest ever to hold the post. The post-election overhaul after the party's third successive debacle had already seen Satyadev Katare, 59, replacing Ajay Singh as leader of the legislature party.

Yadav takes the place of the tribal leader Kantilal Bhuria who had a forgettable tenure. The new appointments show a paradigm shift with the party veering away from the Singhs –Digvijaya and Ajay who called the shots during Bhuria's tenure.

AFP

AFP

Ajay Singh apparently paid for his proximity to Digvijaya Singh despite faring well in the assembly elections winning Churhat and ensuring a relatively better show for the party in the Vindhya region. Despite their own failures in the recent elections the other faction leaders, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kamal Nath have managed to get control over the legislative and organisational wings of the party. They now face the challenge of proving their mettle in the Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress has 11 out 29 seats from the state in the present Lok Sabha.

Incidentally Yadav takes over a post assigned to his father Subhash Yadav a decade ago (in 2003) when the Congress lost after a decade-long term under Digvijaya Singh as chief minister. Subhash Yadav, a party heavyweight, was an ally of Arjun Singh, Digvijaya's mentor.

However, Digvijaya kept Yadav out of his ministry and opposed his appointment as PCC chief.

That drove young Yadav away from the Singhs. He assumes the charge with the party in similar turmoil and amid similar resistance from Digvijaya camp. Yadav, a commerce graduate, has shouldered his father's legacy efficiently, getting elected to the Lok Sabha from Khargone and Khandwa with large margins. He acquitted himself well as union minister of state for heavy industries and public enterprises and later for agriculture and food processing industry.

After Katare's appointment as CLP leader, the Singh camp believed Ajay would be made PCC chief to maintain a balance between the two factions. The Scindia-Singh battle had turned bitter with the former's staunch supporters, Satyavrat Chaturvedi and Mahendra Singh Kalukheda, launching a sharp attack against the rival camp. In the previous House, Ajay Singh was handed the CLP leadership long after his predecessor Yamuna Devi's death.

This time around Ajay Singh and Kalukhera were the original claimants for CLP leadership in a bitter battle for factional supremacy. Short on numbers, Kalukheda vitiated the atmosphere saying Ajay Singh's earlier appointment was on "compassionate grounds" as he had lost his father Arjun Singh. The resultant war of words forced the party to drop both the candidates and choose a moderate Katare from the Scindia camp.

Another Digvijaya man, Dr Rajendra Singh, MLA from Amarpatan, was nominated as deputy speaker.

Bala Bachchan, a senior tribal MLA and Kamal Nath's protégé who was earlier considered for the Deputy Speaker's post was subsequently offered deputy leader's post in the CLP. He declined, leaving the party to rejig its plans for tribal support during the Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier indications about Scindia himself leaving the ministry to head the party were put to rest with Yadav's appointment. Among the other names considered were Bala Bachchan and Dr Govind Singh. Yadav's nomination meets the party's need to project an OBC face. The three BJP chief ministers in state over the past ten years have all belonged to other backward classes.

Almost half the state voters fall in the OBC bracket, and the Congress could have gone to the assembly polls under an OBC leader. But it never gave the idea a serious thought because Subhash Yadav, a prominent OBC leader, could not increase support from the community during his tenure as PCC chief. Like chief minister Shivraj Chouhan, Arun Yadav is an OBC leader and a farmer. But, while Chouhan cashed in on these attributes with intense public relation exercises the new MPCC chief has yet to make his mark.

His biggest challenge is to rejuvenate a party that hasn't tasted big ticket success over the past ten years. Being a lesser known figure in the party he can work without the fear of failure and take all factions along. Even Scindia who led the party's campaign in the assembly election could not present a neutral image within the party.

Capt Gopinath flays AAP decision on FDI in retail

Bangalore: In ideological discordant notes within the Aam Aadmi Party, Captain Gopinath, pioneer of the low-cost airline business, today slammed the decision of AAP government in Delhi to reject FDI in retail, saying the party is "running in danger" of being branded like other parties of resorting to cheap and populist measures.

Capt Gopinath.

Capt Gopinath.

"The move would send a wrong message to investors that India was an unstable country with regard to economic policies", he told PTI and asked AAP, which he joined recently, to "step back and deliberate and not do anything in haste in terms of policy decisions."

Stating that AAP is unwittingly also playing into the hands "Indian oligopolies" who were opposing FDI in retail so that they could have a monopoly, he said "which means it is ok for Indian corporates to rape India and not foreign retail." "That's exactly what 'crony capitalism is," he added.

Gopinath said "I think personally opening up is good for the farmers and also the economy and the country. The view of small retailers is unfounded."

Explaining why he joined the Arvind Kejriwal-led outfit, he said AAP's DNA is inherited from Anna Hazare. "While Anna gave hope and aspirations, Kejriwal gave the ideology and the movement a platform to convert into political action."

"....they have completely given a new dimension to politics and shown that elections can be fought and won without money, muscle and caste backing. That is the biggest contribution to Indian politics."

He said the challenge would be how to scale this up nationally and ensure elected representatives of AAP down the line "do not succumb to arrogance, greed and abuse of power and go the way of all flesh."

Noting that AAP is still a young party, he said AAP must step back a little and come out with a long-term vision for India on economy, fiscal policy, defence and foreign affairs that will create a stable India which can remove poverty and improve living standards and create a happy society.

"The enemy of AAP is not from without- Congress or BJP, it is from within. Can it remain humble and be true to its ideology of being servants of the people and not masters once they come to power?," Gopinath said.

After Vinod Binny, another AAP member attacks party leadership

New Delhi: After Vinod Kumar Binny, another AAP member Tina Sharma attacked the party leadership over alleged non-fulfilment of the promises made in its 2013 manifesto and ignoring the issue of women's security.

"We have not catered to the manifesto of 2013 (assembly elections) and we have started the work on 2014 (Lok Sabha polls) manifesto", Shama told reporters.

Firstpost/Naresh Sharma

The former BJP member said "people ask me that when you have not endorsed the manifesto of 2013 and you are talking to us on 2014 manifesto, then what is your credibility?"

Sharma, who joined AAP after its electoral success last month, also charged the party with not looking into women's safety issues.

"Where are women commandos? Why have the issues of women become unimportant to the party? Why have they become ceremonial," Sharma said.

Rahul Gandhi may not be declared Cong’s PM candidate at AICC meet

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi may have expressed his willingness to undertake any responsibility given to him by his party but contrary to widespread speculation, he is unlikely to be named the Congress' prime ministerial candidate.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. PTI

The Gandhi scion has appeared reluctant in the past to take up any responsibility in the government but ahead of the April-May Lok Sabha elections he had said on Tuesday that he was a sepoy of the party and was willing to take up any job given to him, fuelling further speculation that he would take on Narendra Modi for the PM stakes.

"I am a sepoy of Congress. I will obey whatever order is given to me. I will do whatever Congress wants me to do... Decisions are taken in our party by senior leaders," he had told a Hindi daily.

However, the thinking in the Congress is that it may be "risky" to announce him as the PM candidate with the party facing an uphill task in the polls and if he is given that responsibility the blame would go to him in the event Congress does badly at the hustings.

Ahead of the AICC session on Friday, the party leadership was weighing other options such as making Rahul Gandhi in charge of the election campaign and even appointing him as Working President of the party. However, talk of Rahul Gandhi being made the PM candidate is still making the rounds.

Those who do not favour Rahul Gandhi being made the candidate for the PM's post point out that Congress does not have the tradition of naming candidate for the PM's post ahead of the polls.

Exception was made in 2009 when party President Sonia Gandhi had at a press conference released a party document that showed her and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the cover and blocked her picture to say Singh would be the candidate.

The party leadership may rely on that tradition and entrust the responsibility of campaign or Working President, although there is little doubt that there will be clamour at the AICC meeting to make him a candidate.

AICC General Secretary Digvijaya Singh had last week said there was no need for the party to declare a prime ministerial candidate before the elections.

Narmada Bachao Andolan and AAP: A match made in rural heaven?

On Monday, the National Alliance for People's Movements and Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) announced that it had would ally with the Aam Aadmi Party.

"We have studied their (AAP's) documents and we have found that micro to macro-economic view point is more or less reflected in it. We will further continue with the dialogue and would like to contribute our views in not just the manifesto but also in the working culture and their working documents," Patkar said, while announcing the alliance.

For AAP, this alliance is likely to boost its position in rural India, given that Narmada Bachao Andolan has been active in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh for nearly 25 years.

But how exactly this alliance will play out in the Lok Sabha elections is yet to be decided.

"The final strategy is still to be decided. But given that we have decided to go all out in the national elections, we can't call ourselves a national party without going for a strong rural push. We have to reach out to 60 percent of the country's population as well," AAP leader Pankaj Gupta told Firstpost.

Mayank Gandhi, an AAP leader from Maharashtra, pointed out that the party has a strong wave of support in rural Maharashtra.

"The support in rural Maharashtra has been tremendous. I myself was surprised by the kind of support our meetings have got," Gandhi said.

It's still not clear whether persons associated with the NBA movement will be contesting on a AAP ticket.

"Discussions regarding that will be finalised on 16 and 17 January. However there is no doubt that there are some very good activists with the movement who have been working for so many years. The party would be happy to see them contest," Gandhi said.

As far as the NBA is concerned, post its alliance with AAP, it is hoping to take its fight of 25 years into active politics.

According to NBA leader Alok Agarwal, the decision to join AAP will see expansion of the AAP message into rural and adivasi parts of India.

"I want to stand for elections from Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh. Of course it will be for the AAP to decide on the ticket but I have formally joined the party," Agarwal said.

He said that the NBA's individual identity will remain separate from that of the AAP but the movement will help spread the message of the party in every village.

"We are entering active politics and will now campaign for the AAP in every village," he said.

Agarwal was also confident about support in rural parties for the AAP.

"There is a lot of growing supporting. AAP is an idea that wants to change politics and empower the common man to enter politics. We will go and spread that idea further," he said. There is will also be a special emphasis on Adivasi areas, he added.

Post the alliance AAP is also likely to try and challenge the idea that it is a middle-class urban phenomena. Party leaders also don't think that an alliance with NBA will turn away middle-class voters.

"We all believe in various ideologies. However I don't think that because one person joins, the party's way of thinking will get changed drastically. We are for the aam aadmi and we will continue to support that message,"Gupta said.

Gandhi pointed out that the party enjoyed support with lower classes even in Delhi.

"I completely disagree that we are an urban middle-class party. In Delhi too you must have seen lots of Dalits, lower classes, etc voted for AAP. We are seeing strong support in rural areas as well and among the disadvantaged groups," he said.

Some, like Agarwal, believe the NBA's credibility will be a boost for the party.

"AAP does have support in the rural areas. As far as NBA is concerned, it has been working and fighting for this issue for the last 25 years. We have a certain credibility which I think will strengthen AAP's overall image," he said.

I demand Rahul to be named PM candidate: Sanjay Nirupam

Nagpur: Congress MP from Mumbai, Sanjay Nirupam today demanded that Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi should be right away declared as the party's Prime Ministerial candidate.

He was replying when pointed out that Rahul had hinted at his willingness in this regard.

The Congress MP said, party President Sonia Gandhi had said that Prime Ministerial nominee would be announced at an appropriate time, and "now was the time".

"The issue may come up during the meeting of All India Congress Committee on January 17, and if given a chance, he would raise the issue there," Nirupam said.

When asked about AAP leader Kumar Vishwas contesting from Amethi against Rahul Gandhi, he said he may lose his security deposit.

On Bollywood actor Salman Khan praising Narendra Modi, Nirupam said his comments should not be taken seriously.

"Modi had no chance of becoming the Prime Minister," he said.

BJP has no presence in half the country and how would it muster the majority, he added.

Sonakshi Sinha disheartened with few nominations for Lootera

Mumbai: Actress Sonakshi Sinha, who garnered appreciation for her performance in Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera, is unhappy that the film failed to get nominated for this year's movie awards.

The actress took to Twitter to share her disappointment, adding that the film had received enough appreciation for it to be nominated.

"Disheartening how Lootera has been held back from most of the nominations this year. Didn't they call it a masterpiece, poetry in motion, world-class and technically superior film when it released? That seems like qualification enough to be out there," Sonakshi tweeted Wednesday.

The period drama, which also featured Ranveer Singh in the lead, received a mixed response after its release.

Although the actress has been nominated in the Best Actress category for the 20th Annual Life OK Screen Awards, she felt "out of place" as no one else from the film was nominated.

"Not nominating Vikramaditya for Best Director, Ranveer for acting, Amit Trivedi for music, (Mahendra) Shetty for cinematography, Aditya (Kanwar) for art, Subarna (Ray Chaudhuri) for costumes, Amitabh (Bhattacharya) for lyrics makes my nomination feel so out of place," she said.

Sonakshi said she is proud of the film, irrespective of whether it wins awards or not.

"...this is a very special film, (I) will always be proud of Lootera whether or not they acknowledge us," tweeted Sonakshi, who has been seen in films like DabanggRowdy Rathore and R...Rajkumar.

Sources said besides discussing issues of Maharashtra politics and the alliance, the candidature of former RPI leader Ram Das Athawale, who has joined BJP, for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha poll was also discussed.

The discussion on the February 7 Rajya Sabha poll assumes significance as there are seven seats from Maharashtra.

Two seats each are likely to go to Congress and NCP, while BJP and Shiv Sena will get one each and one seat is being keenly contested.

The meeting is significant as it came a day after the state Coordination Committee met, a BJP leader said.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said BJP and Shiv Sena are the oldest ideological allies whose tie-up goes back to over 20 years. The two parties ran a coalition government in Maharashtra between 1995 and 1999.

BJP is seeking to expand the alliance under its umbrella ahead of the Lok Sabha elections and is trying to rope in more partners as well as strengthen ties with its old allies.

Among the candidates retiring from Rajya Sabha are Dalwai Husain Umar, Prakash Javadekar, Y P Trivedi, Murli Deora, Rajkumar Dhoot, Bharatkumar Raut and Janardhan Waghmare.

AAP no place for Dalits, says Mayawati

By Ratan Mani Lal

Lucknow: The principle of early mover advantage may not hold true always in Indian politics. The massive rally by Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati in Lucknow on her birthday on Wednesday—the first by her in the past many months—amply proved it by sending out a strong message that her support base was intact and she was prepared to go it alone for Lok Sabha 2014.

More than two lakh people had gathered to listen to Mayawati on a cold, windy day at the vast Ramabai Ambedkar maidan. The size of the crowd matches favourably with the rallies held by Narendra Modi, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi in the state in the past couple of months.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati. PTI

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati. PTI

Mayawati had campaigned widely for the assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh but the party did not fare too well in these states. But on her birthday she re-assured her followers in Uttar Pradesh that she was back in the reckoning with a bang.

In her two-hour long she admitted that a "grand alliance" against BSP by casteist parties was responsible for the poor showing of her party in the three states, and gave out a clear signal that the party will go it alone in the Lok Sabha battle. This comes amid speculations in the past few weeks that the Congress was keen on an alliance with the BSP.

Over the past one year, as the popularity and credibility of the Samajwadi Party and its government in Uttar Pradesh has steadily declined and the Congress has repeatedly proved itself to be a non-starter, it was considered a fair possibility that the contest in coming Lok Sabha election may turn out to be between BSP and BJP.

Mayawati gave credence to this by devoting a significant part of her speech to the BJP, saying that Narendra Modi was "far ahead" of all others in the race for prime ministership. In fact she took Modi's name at least ten times when she mentioned all the major poll promises of the BJP one by one - creation of more jobs, encouragement to industry, return of black money, cleaning of the Ganga and erection of Sardar Patel's statue. She then said that these were "empty promises" and accused the BJP of conspiring to implicate her in the Taj corridor case. She revealed that in 2004 she had moved away from BJP as it wanted to contest the lion's share of seats in Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati not only repeated her claim to be the only party and leader who is a true well-wisher of the Dalits, but also cautioned her followers to stay away from the Aam Admi Party. For her, Arvind Kejriwal's move to put everyone—including Dalits—in the category of aam admi is grave injustice. "By putting Dalits along with baniyas and other castes in the category of aam admi, the party is not giving them the status they deserve, for they have been oppressed for long. The government in Delhi has done nothing new by giving free water and reducing electricity tariff, as the burden on others will increase," she said.

The BSP supremo referred to the oppression on Dalits in Haryana, "the home state of Arvind Kejriwal" as an example of that party's lack of concern for Dalits.

Another section which she wooed quite vocally was Muslims. She said that Muslims had suffered the most during the present SP rule in a number of riots. "While they suffered in Muzaffarnagar, the Samajwadi Party leaders and the government celebrated with dance and music," she said, and appealed to the Muslims to support BSP for the Lok Sabha election as the minorities have felt "most secure in our rule".

She accused Samajwadi Party of running a mafia government in Uttar Pradesh. "The state has turned into a crime pradesh," she said, demanding the imposition of President's rule. She also lashed out at the Congress-led UPA government, and blamed it for inflation, economic slowdown, price rise, rising unemployment, growing disparity in society, policy paralysis, threat to internal security and a weak foreign policy.

Mayawati said that in view of BSP's strength, all parties had joined forces to prevent her, "a Dalit woman", from rising in politics. She called upon her supports to go out and tell everyone about this "conspiracy".

It had been reported for quite some days that Mayawati would celebrate a low-key birthday to show solidarity with the riot victims, but the arrangements made for the rally are no less than grand. An entire mini-city has come up near the rally venue where arrangements for stay, food and transport for lakhs of people have been made. The party has booked 27 special trains to ferry people from all states to Lucknow and back. The entire city has been decked in the BSP's blue colour and huge hoardings, banners and flags have been put up across the city. Taking a dig at the massive arrangements, Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav has said this was a strange way to show austerity.

Senior Congress leader denies rift over Rahul’s PM nomination

While young leaders in the Congress party made quite a show of supporting Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi's nomination as their party's prime ministerial candidate, the party's old guard seems to be holding its cards close to its chest.

Expectedly, Gandhi's first one-on-one interview to a Hindi daily on Tuesday has sent the media and political circles into tizzy with speculation reaching fever pitch over his imminent nomination as the party's PM candidate.

His statement that he is ready for any role that the party will assign to him has been widely interpreted as his nod to being declared as the PM nominee of the Congress party in the run to Lok Sabha 2014.

Prominent young leaders in the Congress party such as Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari and Rajasthan Congress President Sachin Pilot have gone all out to support the prospect of Gandhi's elevation as the party's prime ministerial candidate.

Time for a higher posting? PTI

Time for a higher posting? PTI

Pilot was quoted by the media as saying that he believed that Gandhi was "someone who can lead the party's charge. It will unify the party across all parts of the nation."

Tewari went one step further telling reporters that Gandhi was their "natural leader" and that "we would want that we contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections under his leadership."

The Congress old guard, however, doesn't seem to be openly gushing at such a prospect just yet. The only leader to have expressed apprehensions over projecting Gandhi as the Congress PM candidate is AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh.

Responding to speculation about Gandhi being named as PM nominee, Singh had said, "I have been consistently saying that we are a parliamentary democracy and here it is not a contest between key personalities. It's a contest between policies, ideologies and programmes of parties…debate about Rahul Gandhi versus Narendra Modi, Modi versus Arvind Kejriwal and Rahul versus Modi versus Kejriwal is to do with TRP readings of the electronic media."

Party leaders, however, maintain that there is no divide within the party between young and senior leaders on the issue of making Gandhi the PM nominee.

A senior leader of the party said, "Everybody's demand is that he should be elevated or that he should be nominated as the prime ministerial candidate. There is no divide between the young and old leaders in the party. Everyone wants him to be elevated. But it all depends on him. It is his decision."

Characterising Digvijaya Singh's statement as a 'personal opinion', the senior leader said, "There may be leaders in the party who may have personal opinions about projecting a PM candidate at this stage. This has to do with the prevailing perception in the media regarding the Congress party. The well-wishers of Rahul Gandhi are of the opinion that he should not be projected at this stage."

Downplaying Gandhi's response to the national daily to the question on whether he would accept nomination as PM candidate of the party, the leader said, "He hasn't said he is ready for prime ministership. He said whatever role is given to him by the party he will perform to the best of his abilities. This is a generic statement, everybody will say this. It is a not a specific statement."

Shinde’s integrity impeccable, says Narayanasamy

New Delhi: Calling Sushilkumar Shinde a "man of impeccable integrity", Union Minister V Narayanasamy today said former home secretary RK Singh had made allegations against the Home Minister as he was "expecting some kind of position in the government".

"I could see he (former Home Secretary) was expecting some kind of position in the government. That is what Digvijaya also said in his statement. Since it did not materialise, he is making a lot of bold allegations. The allegations which are not borne by truth. It is very unfortunate," Narayanasamy told reporters in New Delhi.

Referring to the former home secretary, he said it was not correct for people working in government positions, who have got access to secret documents, to make allegations without any basis or proof.

The Union minister said Singh was changing his version all the time.

"I would like to make it very clear that as far as Home Minister Shinde is concerned, he has got impeccable integrity. He is a man of action," Narayanasamy said.

He said Shinde is bringing several reforms in the home ministry as well as the overall law and order situation in the country. "Especially in Delhi, it (law and order) has been maintained," the minister said.

Singh, who recently joined BJP, had alleged that Shinde had interfered with IPL betting probe by Delhi Police.

Shinde’s remarks on minority youths in jail a new low: Narendra Modi

Ahmedabad: Dubbing as a "brazen attempt" to woo the minority community Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde's remarks on minority youths in jails on terror charges, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said it marked a "new low" for the country.

He also asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to advise his cabinet colleague not to focus his attention on minorities alone as "principles at stake" could not be sacrificed "at the altar of political expediency".

In a letter to Singh, the BJP's prime ministerial contender said Shinde's statement could send a wrong message about the country's criminal justice system and have a demoralising effect on the law enforcement machinery.

"The Home Minister's concern is a brazen and callous attempt to woo the minority community and even the minority community will raise questions on the timing of such statements," Modi said.

"The suggestion (from Shinde) is unprecedented and marks a new low for the country.... the principles at stake are far too valuable to be sacrificed at the altar of political expediency," he said.

The Gujarat Chief Minister said, "a crime is a crime irrespective of the birth marks of the criminal and his religious beliefs could not determine the guilt or innocence."

Shinde had last week made a statement that he would write to all state governments to set up review or screening committees to assess the role of minority youths languishing in jails on terror charges without trial.

He said Shinde's suggestion was against the constitutional principle of right to equality before law.

Modi also wrote that the suggestion was against the constitutional principle of right to equality before law.

Khobragade told PTI that post his retirement, there were speculations about his foray into politics.

"There is nothing new in it (about joining politics). After I retired from the service the talks started doing the rounds. Yes, I will contest the Lok Sabha election," he said.

Refusing to disclose which political party he would join, Khobragade said, "talks are on with various parties. I will make an announcement about it at an appropriate time."

Asked about her daughter Devyani's priority to bring back her two children to India, he said that they will be back next month.

"We will have to get their admissions done in a Delhi school to continue their education," said Khobragade, who had served as the BEST General Manager.

Govt extends special package for Himachal, Uttarakhand to boost growth

New Delhi: The Centre today extended the special package for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till March 2017, a move that will help accelerate industrial growth of both the hilly states.

"The Cabinet extended the special package for the states of Himachal and Uttarakhand, which has two components - the capital investment subsidy and the freight subsidy. And this special package will continue through the 12th Plan up to 31st March 2017," Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma told reporters here.

A special package for industrial development in both the states was extended by the government in 2003. In 2007, it was curtailed, before being restored till 2010.

The capital investment subsidy was one of the major component of a special industrial package offered to the states by the union government.

According to a media report, Himachal Pradesh got maximum investment from 2003 to 2010, when there was a special industrial package from the central government in force. Most investments were in pharmaceutical, food processing, textile, packaging and light engineering sectors.

Narendra Modi hits out at Shinde’s directive on minority arrests

Ahmedabad: Slamming union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde's advisory to the states to release wrongfully detained "minority youth", BJP leader Narendra Modi Wednesday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention in the matter.

Modi, who is also the chief minister of Gujarat, in a comment on Twitter Wednesday, said he has written to the prime minister about this advisory.

"Wrote letter to prime minister on the home minister's repeated statements on wrongful arrest of youngsters from particular communities. Home minister's suggestion marks an unprecedented low for our country," Modi said Wednesday.

"PM should intervene and take necessary action," he said.

In a letter that has become controversial, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Friday asked all state chief ministers to be "careful" while arresting members from minorities. The home minister wrote to state chief ministers on detention procedures and asked them to form a panel to review cases of people jailed without trial.

Modi, however, said: "Thankfully, our criminal justice system has never taken into account faith or religion of an accused. Why bring vote bank politics even here?"

Modi said the minority communities "can see through these brazen and callous attempts" of the home minister, and sought to know why are such statements being made now.

"It's clear that this is an attempt by the HM (home minister) to tinker with the criminal justice system of the nation in violation of the laws of our land. A crime is a crime, irrespective of birth marks of the criminal. Religious beliefs can't determine guilt or innocence," Modi said.

Make sure NRIs get to vote in general elections, BJP tells CEC

New Delhi: A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Wednesday met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) V.S. Sampath and asked him to ensure that non-resident Indians (NRIs) are able to vote in the Lok Sabha polls.

NRIs were given voting rights in 2010 through an amendment in the Representation of People Act, 1951.

The convenor of BJP's NRI cell Vijay Jolly said a majority of the NRIs are, however, unable to vote as they have to travel all the way to India to exercise their franchise.

In a letter submitted to the CEC, the BJP leaders sought arrangements like postal ballots or voting through Indian missions abroad for NRIs.

"Due to their professional and family circumstances, it is difficult for a large majority of the NRI community to travel to India specifically for the purpose of exercising their voting right. We don't think it is practical that NRIs would travel back to India just to vote," the BJP leader said in his letter.

"As a result of these difficulties, the right to vote for the majority of NRIs has remained only on paper," he said.

The BJP also quoted figures saying that out of about two million Malayalis living abroad, only 8,820 NRIs had their names on the electoral rolls, of which only 4,639 turned up to cast their votes on April 13, 2011, when the last assembly elections were held in Kerala.

Jolly added that the present government policy is acting as a deterrent to exercising the right to vote by NRIs.

"There are other feasible modes by which NRIs could exercise their valuable right... through postal ballot, online voting, or voting at an Indian Mission abroad," the letter suggested.

The party urged the commission to "take appropriate steps" for "effective provisions for NRI voting rights for the forthcoming (Lok Sabha) elections of 2014".

Rahul Gandhi factually wrong on personality-oriented politics: Jaitley

New Delhi: Hitting out at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for deriding "personality-oriented" politics of Narendra Modi, BJP on Wednesday said though he got the principle against such politics right, he got his facts wrong as Congress has functioned like this in the past.

Criticising the personality-oriented politics of the Congress, Leader of Oppositon in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley cited examples of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and now Rahul Gandhi for running the party at the "whims of an individual".

"Rahul Gandhi has got it right. Political parties cannot be personality centric. Political parties must have a structure, an ideology and inner party democracy. They cannot be run on the whims of an individual... Rahul Gandhi has got the principle against personality centered party right, he has got his facts all wrong," he said.

Jaitley attacked Gandhi for making it to the top of the Congress party due to the dynastic politics it promoted.

"In a structured party like the BJP or the Left, Rahul Gandhi would still have been struggling to get his first assignment as an office bearer in the Party structure or in a legislative body. It is only in a personality and family dominated set-up like the Congress that he can be nominated as the unquestioned supremo."

Defending BJP leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi, he said, "Having popular leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi is very different from the BJP becoming personality centric. These leaders were and will always remain subject to the party structure."

Deriding the BJP campaign to make the Gujarat Chief Minister as the next Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi had on Tuesday said that personality-oriented rule is "not in the national interest".

"The government should not be run on the whims and fancies of a particular person. The future of 120 crore people can be shaped up and improved only by taking everybody along," the Congress Vice President had said.

AAP rift widens: Arvind Kejriwal is a liar, says Vinod Kumar Binny

After party MLA Vinod Kumar Binny accused the Aam Aadmi Party of failing to live up to its promises, party leader Arvind Kejriwal hinted that the party MLA's outburst may be linked to being denied a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

Binny in turn has called the AAP chief a liar.

"First he had come to me seeking a ministerial post, and we rejected the demand."

"After that he said 'I will contest the Lok Sabha elections'. He had come to my house to seek a Lok Sabha ticket. The party has decided that no sitting MLA will get a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections," Kejriwal told reporters today.

The Delhi Chief Minister added that there was a meeting of all 70 candidates who contested the Delhi polls but the MLA did not raise a single point in the meeting.

"I do not know what his intentions are and I do not even want to get into them. We are the most sensitive government towards resolving issues. We welcome criticism, be it from the public, media or BJP," he said.

The AAP party chief also questioned the timing of Binny's public outburst and said that he could have brought up the matter during a meeting of elected representatives of the party yesterday.

However, Binny accused Kejriwal of lying about him having sought a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

"If Arvind-bhai has said this then it's an unfortunate thing and no one is a bigger liar than him. There was no talk of a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections," Binny told ANI.

He also said that he had never even had any interest in being an MLA and had joined the AAP purely to battle corruption.

"I will hold a press conference tomorrow to answer all your queries. After tomorrow's meet, you will not have any more doubts", he told journalists clamouring to know the reason behind his very public disgruntlement with the newly elected Delhi government.

"In the first MLA list, my name was there in it. I myself asked the party to remove my name from the list. I am only concerned with the issues, not in becoming a MLA," Binny told CNN-IBN

Binny a former Congress party activist who joined the AAP, said that he was unhappy that the party had been unable to fulfil its promises to the Delhi electorate and has said he will hold a press conference on the matter tomorrow.

"There is a lot of difference between what AAP promised and how the government is now working. I will divulge all these things in a press conference tomorrow to ensure accountability and transparency in the party," the Laxmi Nagar MLA told reporters.

BJP hold protest, demand AAP Minister Somnath Bharti’s resignation

The BJP staged a protest Wednesday demanding the resignation of Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti, who had been pulled up by a court for "tampering with evidence" in a case he handled last year.

The AAP Law Minister has been accused of tampering with evidence

The demonstration was led by BJP leader Arti Mehra, and people raised slogans against the law minister.

"The law minister has been accused of tampering with the evidence. On top of that, they say the court is wrong. A law minister cannot do an unlawful thing," Mehra, a former mayor of Delhi, said.

"It is a big issue, so we will also submit a memorandum to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal demanding his removal," Mehra said.

A media report Tuesday said Bharti, then an advocate, had been pulled up by special Central Bureau of Investigation court judge Poonam A. Bamba last August along with his client Pawan Kumar, who was facing charges of corruption, for influencing the prosecution witness by speaking to him on the phone and discussing the case.

Congress stages walkout from MP Assembly in protest against Speaker

Bhopal: Congress on Wednesday staged a walkout from the Madhya Pradesh Assembly in protest against the Speaker not allowing the Leader of Opposition Satyadev Katare to speak on Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's reply to the motion of thanks on the Governor's address.

Congress' plea of speaking on the Chief Minister's reply was turned down by Speaker Sitasharan Sharma on the ground that after the Leader of the House's reply there is no rule or tradition for the Opposition leader to speak on the matter.

Katare insisted that he had right to speak on the CM's reply on the issue as the latter did not reply to many issues raised by the Opposition.

Congress' Mukesh Nayak also intervened and backed Katare on the matter.

The Opposition leader's plea that Congress wanted to speak as representative of people also failed to impress the Speaker.

However, when Speaker took up other listed business of the House, Congress MLAs staged a walkout.

After the MLAs re-assembled and raised the issue again, the Speaker not only mentioned the rule that did not allow the members to speak on the issue but also told them that since they have staged a walkout, the issue is already over and they have no right to raise it again now.

Earlier, Chouhan in his reply to the motion of thanks listed his government's various plans, including Narmada-Kshipra river linking scheme to develop Madhya Pradesh as one of the most advanced states in the country.

Modi can draw crowds, what about votes, asks Goa BJP MLA

Panaji: BJP MLA Vishnu Wagh, who was allegedly attacked in December by party workers over reports that he was joining NCP, today said it remains to be seen whether Modi can translate the crowd into votes for the upcoming polls. "Narendra Modi can draw crowds but (we) will have to see if (he) can attract voters," said Wagh, who represents St. Andre constituency.

Wagh was allegedly attacked by the BJP cadre last year, apparently on reports that he was on his way out to join NCP. "A crowd of such high number does not mean that all will vote for BJP for Lok Sabha elections," Wagh said. According to organisers, around 1.3 lakh people attended the public meeting held on January 12 at Merces village near here.

Wagh, a writer-turned-politician, said he abstained from attending the rally due to presence of those people who had attacked him and felt threatened. "People arrived to hear Modi and his views. He is a good speaker and people came to hear him," the MLA said. Wagh, who had quit Congress to join BJP ahead of the state Assembly elections in 2012, was attacked by a mob on December 20 when he was returning after attending a public function in a village, 40 kms away from Panaji.

Wagh had clarified that he would remain with BJP and will float a social front for backward sections of society.

BJP, Cong, SP working together to prevent my rise in politics: Mayawati

Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati said Wednesday that the Congress, BJP and Samajwadi Party (SP) were all working in cahoots to prevent her, a Dalit woman, from rising in politics.

Addressing a mammoth "Savdhan" (caution) rally in the Uttar Pradesh capital, she exhorted party workers and supporters to fan out into every nook and cranny in the country to inform people of the inclusive policies of the BSP.

MayawatiReutersShe asked them to ensure that the "vote transfer" strategy of political rivals against the Bahujan Samaj Party is countered.

"We cannot just keep complaining about the others, we must also devise strategies to defeat this nefarious design of our opponents," she told the crowd, which roared in approval.

Mayawati asked her supporters to ensure that people of all sections, "sarva samaj" (all of society), are brought under the BSP's umbrella, which will unite people from all classes and castes, including the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and the other backward classes.

Pointing out that while her party only won 20 Lok Sabha seats in 2009, its candidates stood second in 47 seats, the Dalit leader said the time has come to focus on these seats also, so that the party bags the maximum number of seats in the state.

Uttar Pradesh has 80 Lok Sabha constituencies, and all parties are eyeing the state to gain power at the centre in the crucial Lok Sabha polls scheduled for April-May this year.

Alleging that the central parties have unleashed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against her, Mayawati said she was a victim of a political witch hunt that cornered her between 2003-2006.

"I was pushed into trouble between those years, but I never lost hope and am thankful to all those who stood by me then," she said, while trying to strike an emotional chord with the people who braved intense cold to attend the rally.

Urging party workers and supporters to ensure that the BSP returns to power with absolute majority in Uttar Pradesh in the state assembly polls of 2017, Mayawati asked them to ensure that the state sends the maximum number of BSP members to the Lok Sabha.

She took a dig at other parties, saying that her rally was not of people "sitting on chairs, but of people who sit on durries (mats)".

She targetted arch rival Samajwadi Party and accused it of running a mafia government in Uttar Pradesh. The state has turned into a "crime pradesh", she said, demanding the imposition of president's rule.

Despite extending support to the United Progressive Alliance government at the centre during its second term in office, Mayawati lashed out at the Congress-led government, and blamed it for inflation, economic slowdown, price rise, rising unemployment, growing disparity in society, policy paralysis, threat to internal security and a weak foreign policy.

Nitish Kumar’s blind eye : Bihar’s Mr Clean has a dirty neta problem

Nitish Kumar must be feeling a little miffed.

With his very dramatic break-up with the BJP after the ascent of Narendra Modi he was clearly taking a calculated risk – positioning himself as the NaMo alternative on the national scene. He felt that he could project himself as the Third Front Modi. An efficient can-do governance, but without the baggage of 2002.

The strategy was clear. If Modi wanted to sell himself as the development chief minister, Nitish Kumar could do the same. Even better while Modi's critics scoffed saying he had inherited a state with a robust economy, Kumar could claim credit for cleaning up a state like Bihar – a veritable Augean stable of fodder scams.

When he refused to form a government in 2005 because he did not have a clear majority he burnished his credentials as a man of integrity and principles. He seized the mansion of an IAS officer accused of major corruption adding to his anti-corruption allure. The electrical engineer turned politician was the original Mr. Clean.

PTI

PTI

The media was transfixed. In 2011 India Today dubbed him Bihar's Transformer.

No one could have imagined that in our lifetime a chief minister of Bihar, the state that lent the first letter of the acronym 'BIMARU' used to describe India's basket cases, would preside over the most dramatic turnaround in the country's contemporary history - and rid the expression 'Bihari' of its pejorative connotations.

The Economist gushed in 2010 that he had "uprooted the Jungle raj, restoring law and order." The economy grew 13 percent in 2011 and change was out there for all to see wrote the Economist.

The economic pickup is visible in the state capital, Patna, where people no longer fear to drive nice cars on the new flyover, or further afield. In the village of Tetri, which hosts the thatched huts of refugees from floods in 2008, ten mobile-phone companies compete for custom, offering calls at onepaisa ($0.0002) per second.

Then AAP and Arvind Kejriwal came along to steal his thunder. The media, always fickle, suddenly started to spin fantasies about PM Kejriwal ignoring the fact that the man actually has no track record of governance yet. But in our short attention span media, a new broom always sweeps cleaner.

No wonder when Kejriwal started his janta durbar, Nitish Kumar grumbled he'd been there and done that.

"There was no past example of such a programme when a chief minister interacted directly with the common man. It was started in Bihar during my regime," said Kumar.

At the time of his famous walk-out from the NDA, Kumar had sold it as a matter of principle rather than ambition. "We cannot compromise on our basic principles. We are not worried about the consequences," Kumar said loftily.

But the consequences are now evident in his own backyard writes Amitabh Srivastava in India Today. As India Today put it rather colourfully, leading a minority government "Nitish Kumar looks away as his defiant ministers run riot."

Shyam Rajak, the minister for Food and Consumer Protection is accused of trying to intimidate Ratna Purkayastha, the officiating assistant director of Patna Doordarshan. But Rajak has a big support base among the Mahadalit community. So no action was taken against him. Agriculture minister Narendra Singh was caught napping on the dais while Kumar presented his report card as chief minister. Singh criticized Kumar as well for relying on bureaucrats but again Kumar took no action. Singh's sons are MLAs as well.

India Today lists other ministers who have also embarrassed the party and defied its directives. At one time their actions would have brought about swift retribution. Kumar's iron hand would have come down fast and come down hard.

"There was a time when Nitish had no tolerance for underperforming or politically incorrect ministers, MPs and MLAs," writes Srivastava. In his years as CM, Kumar has removed more than a dozen ministers for various sins of omission and commission. Ramanand Prasad Singh, his transport minister got the boot after an old corruption case resurfaced. In 2010, excise minister Jamshed Ashraf was sacked for leaking confidential documents to the media.

Now, writes Srivastava "(t)he iron hand with which Nitish ruled Bihar before his split with the BJP seems to have gone limp."

Kumar still wants to claim a personal record of probity. His declaration of assets shows him to be poorer than 17 of his ministers and even his own son reports the New Indian Express. Even Arvind Kejriwal is richer than Nitish Kumar with assets over Rs 2 crore. Kumar declared Rs.17,909 cash in hand, and moveable assets worth Rs. 6.88 lakh. His immovable property has remained stuck at Rs 40 lakh since 2011.

But his own affidavit will only go so far. Kumar who had cozied up to the Congress once he had walked out of the NDA is now having to rethink his options. Arch rival Lalu Prasad is out on bail. The Congress has been thrashed in four states in the December elections. "(T)he JD(U) will be the only non-Congress and non-BJP alternative in Bihar," said Kumar recently.

Meanwhile there have already been wrinkles to the Nitish Kumar miracle-worker story.

Al Jazeera reported on how despite his own reputation for personal probity, Kumar could not do without politician-gangsters like Anant Singh who lord it over Bihar politics. Open magazine revealed how Kumar used his government's ad budget to control and bend the media to his will. Press Council chairman Markandey Katju said "The information I have gathered about the media in Bihar is not good… the press does not enjoy freedom at present… I have been told that people don't muster the courage to write against the Bihar government or its officials."

But that actually adds a bit to Nitish Kumar's strong man appeal which is not unappealing to voters. Unfortunately for Kumar, these latest stories about ministers running riot in what India Today called "the rogue durbar" of Nitish Kumar, end up showing him as someone unable or unwilling to control his flock.

And a Mr Clean who built a reputation as the man with no tolerance for corruption and indiscipline, can ill afford to become just another politician turning a blind eye to ministers running amuck even if he has a reputation for personal probity. That sounds a bit like another head of state on his way out in New Delhi and who would want to be compared to him these days.

Lok Sabha 2014 polls won’t be a two-horse race: Omar

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said it is "misplaced arrogance" on the part of political leaders who suggest that the next general election in the country would be a "two-horse race".

"There is a fine line between talk to boost cadre moral and misplaced arrogance. To suggest that next election is 2 (two) horse race is the la(t)ter," Omar wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.com.

The Chief Minister was apparently referring to the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls in the country which many see as a direct fight between ruling Congress and opposition BJP. Omar also questioned the accuracy of polls conducted through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

"Every time I see twitter & FB polls, I'm reminded of @ImranKhanPTI. If social media users elected leaders, he (Imran Khan) would have been leading Pakistan," he posted.

At Ficci meet, Modi attacks UPA’s economic policies

Gandhinagar: Launching an attack on the economic policies of the UPA government, Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the main reason behind the "despair" prevailing in the country was that nobody takes responsibility.

The BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate said India has become a country of "under-achievers" due to lack of planning and there was a need to come out of this situation by building an atmosphere of trust.

"If we had planned well we would have reached great heights. Today, India has become a country of under-achievers. There is no dearth of opportunity for growth of industry in the country. There is a need to come out of this despair. An atmosphere of confidence and trust is very important in India now," he said addressing a Ficci meet.

Taking on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said, "Our Prime Minister likes to speak about 'inclusive growth'. Until we build capacity among poor through education, how can it happen?

Stressing on the need for a holistic approach, the Gujarat Chief Minister said, "If we keep on exporting minerals, the country will not generate employment or development. With every resource, a holistic approach is very necessary."

Blaming the existing regime for the ill-health of the economy, Modi said, "When we talk about growth, infrastructure comes in and that is dependent on the energy sector. Industries are shut because of shortage of fuel. Someone has to take responsibility. The reason for disappointment is that nobody accepts responsibility in this country."

Modi said the country was at the beginning of the 21st century and there was eagerness in the air. "There was talk of the new century approaching but a strategy is yet to be formed."

He said two sectors are most important - agriculture and service sector - and there is a need to focus on improving productivity in agriculture and value additions to improve rural economy.

"The amount of land is not increasing but actually decreasing with population increase. Value addition is the best combination in service and agriculture sector," he said.

Modi said, "We have to make the common man a stakeholder in development. We need to build more small-scale industries. The small things need to be looked at to bring overall development."

Referring to the health sector, he said, "Common man looks for cheap treatment. Indian hospitals are renowned in the world but the insurance process in India holds us back."

"If people know that we have the power to provide insurance, foreigners will come here to get treatment," he said.

He also advised the railways and defence services to start their own universities for filling up large number of vacancies in these sectors.

"We are spending crores on imports, something that the youth in our country can also provide. Instead of hiring people from outside India, should we not start colleges in India," he asked.

Describing himself as an optimistic person, he said, "If there is a glass half full of water, I say there is half water, half air and, therefore, completely filled."

MPPEB scam: 1,000 appointments, selections found fake, says Chouhan

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday admitted that 1,000 out of the over 1.47 lakh appointments and selections made by MP Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) since 2007 were found to be fake.

shivrajsinghchouhan10120831He assured that during the probe, whosoever is found guilty will not be spared irrespective of his/her position.

"The scam was unearthed in 2009 and we immediately ordered a probe into it and asked the concerned authorities to look into it (selections/ appointments) since 2006. So far, 1,000 out of 1.47 lakh appointments and selections made by MPPEB have been found to be fake," Chouhan said replying to the Motion of Thanks in the state Assembly on the Governor's address.

He also praised Indore police for taking swift action since the time they came to know about the scam, by arresting suspected imposters appearing in the selection test for various courses.

In view of the magnitude of the scam, the state government decided to handover the case to the Special Task Force (STF), which is probing it currently in an impartial manner, the Chief Minister said.

However, Congress member Mukesh Nayak insisted on handing over the case to the CBI and alleged that the state government is not doing so as it wanted to save its own people involved in the scam.

Rift in AAP? MLA Vinod Binny says Delhi govt failing to deliver

He had his differences with the leadership of the party over getting a cabinet post, but AAP MLA Vinod Binny today lashed out at the government in Delhi saying that it has failed to deliver on its promises to the electorate of Delhi.

"The government is not fulfilling the promises we made to the people," Binny told ANI today.

I feel party is drifting away from the issues on the basis of which the party came to power, he said.

"Tomorrow in a press conference I will disclose more details and if need be will sit on a hunger strike", he added.

Binny is a former Congress party leader who had quit the party in 2011 and later joined the AAP. He had also won elections twice before as an independent MLA and in 2013 won in the Laxmi Nagar seat.

Earlier Binny had differences with the party over getting a cabinet position but was mollified.

The AAP is not taking this internal dissent lying down and AAP's spokesperson Ashutosh told Times Now that the party did not function by serving individual interests.

"If any body is selfish and wants to serve their self interests then there is no place for such persons in this party," he said, refusing to name Binny.

CNN-IBN reported that the AAP could issue a show cause notice to Binny and even initiate action against him for his comments.
