BJP urges Centre to check ‘anarchy’ by AAP-run Delhi govt

New Delhi: The BJP today accused the Arvind Kejriwal government of total failure to effectively govern Delhi and AAP of spreading anarchy with the help of their supporters and requested the Union home minister to take a serious cognizance of the situation.

"I request the home minister to take a serious cognizance of the situation and direct the LG to ensure the the working of the government should be allowed only within the framework of the Constitution," BJP leader Harsh Vardhan said while condemning AAP's protest in front of the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley's residence.

Calling it a "futile" effort on the part of AAP to win back the "lost confidence" of the electorate, Vardhan said "this is nothing but another drama to misguide the people and to conceal their incapabilities".

Vardhan alleged it is quite evident from some media reports that some top leaders of AAP are in connivance with certain foreign organizations "which are anti India and working to destabilize our country".

Reacting to AAP party's charge that BJP is conspiring to pull down the Kejriwal government, Vardhan said, "This is a laughing matter. If BJP had even the slightest interest in forming the government, they would have done so at the invitation of the Lt Governor and not stick to the principles of the party."

Cong wants Modi to apologise for Guj minister Patel’s remarks

Ahmedabad: Opposition Congress today sought removal of finance minister Nitin Patel for his remarks linking migration from other states to surge in the number of poor families in Gujarat over the last decade.

The state unit president Arjun Modhvadia also demanded apology from chief minister Narendra Modi over the comment made by Patel.

Modhvadia was referring to the statement made by Patel yesterday saying the number of people coming under BPL
criterion has gone up in Gujarat due to migration from other states.

"Narendra Modi should apologise to the nation and take away all the portfolios given to the minister", Modhvadia said.

He also criticised Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray for "anti-migrants mentality". "...There are hundreds of so-called outsiders who have contributed immensely for the development of Gujarat", Modhvadia said.

A row has erupted between BJP and Congress over a circular by food and civil supply department of Gujarat which fixed the poverty line cut-off at Rs 10.70 per day in rural areas and Rs 16.70 per day in urban areas. BJP has rebutted the Congress attack saying it was merely following the criterion fixed by the Centre in 2004 and accused the Congress of not changing the same despite many reminders by the state government.

"The minister (Patel) had failed to realise that in 2004 there was a BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and even (in) Gujarat it was the BJP government led by Chief Minister Modi", Modhvadia said.

Karunanidhi rubbishes AAP’s claims on 2G scam

Chennai: Rubbishing the claims of Aam Aadmi Party on additional evidence emerging about 2G spectrum scam showing alleged role of M Karunanidhi, his daughter Kanimozhi and a top state police officer, the DMK chief today said it was "all lies".

"It is all lies, all lies, all lies," the 90-year-old DMK chief told reporters outside his Gopalapuram residence in Chennai.

Asked about AAP leader Prashant Bhushan accusing him of "cover-up", Karunanidhi shot back saying if media would ask his arch rival and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa about the ongoing disproportionate case against her in Bangalore.

"There is a disproportionate case happening (in Bangalore). Can you ask questions to those involved in that like this? Can you meet the Chief Minister like this," he asked.

Senior AAP members Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav and others had said in Delhi that recently four new taped conversations had surfaced which "throw more light" on the scam in which Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi has been chargesheeted by the CBI.

According to Bhushan, the tapes contained purported conversation between a top officer of the state police and a senior official in Karunanidhi's office as well as between the police officer and Kanimozhi. The alleged conversations took place between November 2010 and February 2011, when Karunanidhi was the chief minister.

AAP had demanded an independent probe into the alleged role played by Karunanidhi and the police officer in "covering up" the scam.

Asked about the prospects of Jayalalithaa becoming prime minister if she contests the Lok Sabha polls "on behalf of a Third Front", Karunanidhi quipped he will "be happy if (she) becomes", so.

Rahul pushes for passage of whistleblower, grievance redressal bills

New Delhi: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Tuesday said all efforts would be made to pass the whistleblowers' protection and the citizen's grievance redressal bills in the upcoming parliament session.

Gandhi met members of the National Campaign for People's Right to Information (NCPRI) and asserted the Congress-led government would make all efforts to ensure that both the bills are passed in the parliament session starting Wednesday, which will be the last parliamentary session of the United Progressive Alliance-II government .

He said passing the bill in parliament was a priority of the Congress, but it was the opposition that created hurdles in the way of the clearance of the bill.

The bills will lapse if not passed during the parliamentary session, Anjali Bhardwaj of the NCPRI told the media after the meeting.

An NCPRI delegation requested Gandhi for setting up of grievance redress authorities in every district of the country so citizens could easily lodge complaints.

"We have met the opposition leaders and they have assured that both the bills will be passed in the upcoming parliamentary session", said Bhardwaj.

"If the bills do not get passed, the parliamentarians should come up with an ordinance to ensure these are discussed when the parliament reconvenes after the elections," she added.

Bhardwaj said till now more than 40 people in the country were killed while trying to expose corruption while nothing concrete was done to protect such people.

The delegation also discussed some amendments to be incorporated in both the bills.

"It must be ensured protection against victimisation is provided to any person, who makes a complaint or renders assistance in the probe, relating to any matter under the jurisdiction of law," said Bhardwaj.

Now, Somnath Barti turns protector of three Ugandan women

New Delhi: In the eye of a storm following his recent midnight raid to bust a sex and drug racket, Delhi's controversial Law Minister Somnath Bharti is now playing an image-changing role — trying to protect three Ugandan women who have turned to him for help.

The three Ugandan women from Malviya Nagar's Khirki Extension had recently registered a complaint with the Delhi police seeking protection from sex traffickers.

"Those women who had no trust on police and even on their own Ugandan Commission approached our law Minister Somnath Bharti seeking help and protection," Education and Urban Development Minister Manish Sisodia said today.

"So those people who were trying to project him as a villain over the midnight raid incident can now see for themselves what is happening there. I am astonished that police has not carried out a raid in the area," he said.

Sisodia said that these women were taken to the District Commissioner's office where their statements were recorded and FIR's against unknown people have been lodged.

These women in their complaints have said that they were brought to India under the garb of providing jobs but were pushed into flesh trade.

"Their passports have been taken away and the persons told them that even the police and the Ugandan High Commission will not help them and that they should compromise if they want to survive. The women have complained that they were being held hostage by a drug mafia," said Sisodia.

Reacting to the latest developments, Bharti said that the matter is "extremely serious, sad and unfortunate".

"This is an extremely serious matter and I would request Delhi Commission for Women to take suo-moto cognizance in this matter and summon the high officials of Delhi police as the statements of the girls itself has revealed that police is in connivance with these drug and sex mafias," Bharti said.

The Ugandan women along with some boys had approached Bharti on Saturday during the Mohallasabha.

Delhi government yesterday had sought the intervention of Ministry of External Affairs in providing "protection" to three Ugandan women after they approached it alleging they were held hostages by drug mafias in Malviya Nagar area of South Delhi.

MLAs fall at Ramesh’s feet pleading not to divide Andhra

New Delhi: About 20 MLAs of Telugu Desam Party today fell at the feet of Jairam Ramesh pleading him not to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh, an act that left the Union minister utterly embarrassed.

One of the MLAs even rolled down on the ground when the car of another Union minister V Narayanasamy was being driven into the Home Ministry while few other TDP legislators damaged the red bacon atop his vehicle.

The scene was created when the ministers were on their way to the North Block, housing the Home Ministry, to attend the meeting of the Group of Ministers to finalise the draft Telangana Bill.

"Sir, please save Andhra Pradesh. Please do not bifurcate Telangana. Please do something...," the MLAs were pleading Ramesh, who was about the enter the North Block.

An embarrassed Ramesh was rescued by CISF and Delhi Police personnel deployed there and escorted inside.

The MLA, who rolled down on the ground in front of Narayanasamy's car, was forcibly removed from the spot by the security personnel, who also escorted the Minister inside the Home Ministry.

A few agitated TDP MLAs also partially damaged the red bacon atop Narayanasamy's car.

TDP MLA P Keshav said the move to table the draft Telangana Bill in Parliament without Andhra Pradesh Assembly's consent was "unconstitutional".

"Parliament has no over-riding powers. Assembly and Parliament are equivalent," he said, referring to rejection of the draft Telangana Bill by the state Assembly.

Officials said Police is contemplating action against the TDP MLAs for the incident in front of the high-security Home Ministry, where prohibitory orders are already in place.

"The MLAs have violated the prohibitory orders and liable for action," an official said.

Modi woos the North East on Nido: Will he succeed?

New Delhi: Aiming to put up a grand show in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in the country's North East, the BJP lead by its prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is leaving no stone unturned to woo the electorate of the region. The brutal murder of a young Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam in Delhi's Lajpat Nagar area recently provided the party with another opportunity and Modi was quick to grab it. The party, which is struggling to play a prominent role in the politics of that region, has in the recent past showed its eagerness to catch the popular imagination of North East India.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. PTI

Soon after Taniam's death, Modi was fast to launch an attack on the Congress on the issue. "Why can't students from North East get houses easily?" questioned Modi at a rally in Meerut. "North East is part of our country and we should ensure best of facilities for them," he said.

Modi's mention of North East in the recent context shows that it's not only a reaction to the incident in Delhi but part of the North East campaign that the BJP has been running for some time now.

It's not only in the recent time that BJP had taken up the North East issue. In 2011, following an incident where a Mizo student was beaten up in Delhi's Sarojini Nagar area, its leader Arun Jaitley managed to gather at least 2,000 youths from the North East at a conference. But irony was that while Jaitley was busy demonstrating his support to the North Eastern community, youths from the audience were more eager to ask the BJP veteran about his stand on AFSPA. Nonetheless, BJP has always showed their solidarity with the North East community in the capital. Delhi after all has a staggering number of 2.5 lakh North Eastern voters in its electoral roll.

That BJP is giving utmost importance to the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the North East including Sikkim was apparent when the party launched its North East mission in November 2013. "The party will accord top priority to the region if the party is voted to power in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections," said Rajnath Singh during a party meet in Assam.

"The campaign for North East is on and we have a few agendas for the NE which includes that all Central funds for the Department of North Eastern Region (DoNER) be in the non-lapsable category," said a BJP leader in Manipur. But he was fast to admit that despite the party's hard ground work, the terrain of North East has been unaccessible. "In the 2012 state elections we had a good chance but had to concede. However, it had very little to do with the Congress party per se. Their chief minister, Ibobi Singh is a popular leader and it was his popularity among the voters that worked," he said without wanting to be named.

The BJP insiders statement echoes with observers. Despite campaigning and picking up the issues of North East, it will be tough for BJP to gain any foothold at the region believes journalists and political analysts. "The BJP has to concede in the North East because people of the region still look at it as a Hindi speaking Hindu agenda party," said a journalist from Manipur. "The majority Hindu of Manipur are the Meiteis and they have their own dynamics which is not similar to the Hindus of the mainland," the journalist said. The other states that also remains unreachable such as Nagaland and Mizoram are Christian-dominated who preferably goes with the Congress.

But in the last one year if BJP has managed to gain some popularity in North East it would be in Assam. "Following the riots last year there is a polarisation in Assam," said a member of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. "People are actually voicing a dissent against the Congress government in the state. There might be demands very soon that Assam wants it own members of Parliament as opposed to Rajya Sabha MPs," he said.

Organisers call Shiv Sena’s protest against Indo-Pak band ‘dictatorship’

By Vishwas Waghmode

Hitting out at Shiv Sena for a protest against a performance by an Indian-Pakistani band at the Mumbai Press Club, one of the organizers Jatin Desai said that the Indian Constitution has given the right of freedom of speech even to the people of other countries coming to India — and such a disruption is like a dictatorship.

He also said that the Shiv Sena caused the disruption with an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

"The Shiv Sena's protest is completely motivated with an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The protest staged without listening to others or considering the other side is a dictatorship. The police should take stern action against the protesters," said Desai adding that Meekal Hasan — the band founder, is his old friend and was helping him with the new initiative.

"The Indian constitution has not only given the right of freedom of speech and expression to Indians but also to the people of other countries coming to India," Desai said.

On Tuesday afternoon, Shiv Sena party workers barged into the Mumbai Press Club during the performance by the band and shouted that no Pakistani group or individual will be allowed in Mumbai.

The Mekaal Hasan Band was poised to announce the first ever Indo-Pak band with members from both Pakistan and India. This was the first initiative of its kind and was aimed to create positive interaction between the musicians of both India and Pakistan.

The band comprises Mekaal Hasan, the guitarist and band founder, Ahsan Papu the flutist, Gino Banks, an Indian drummer, Sheldon D'Silva on bass, and Sharmistha Chatterjee as the vocalist.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police has detained more than a dozen protesters following the incident: "We have detained 13-14 persons, who were aggressive. The action will be taken against them for wrongful assembly and trespass as per sections of the Indian Penal Code," said Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police.

Prakash added that nobody is injured in the incident due to the quick response from police.

Despite Kejriwal’s visit, issue of Nido’s death may not die down

It's been nearly five days since 19-year-old Nido Taniam, a student from Arunachal Pradesh, died after being beaten up in Delhi's Lajpat Nagar. And his death has once again brought up the issue of racism, one that is often sidelined in India.

Perhaps it is the timing of Nido's case or maybe a case of one too many, but the North East community is in no mood to let the issue die down. Nido's death has sparked protests at Jantar Mantar and more importantly the community has managed to get support from two of India's biggest politicians.

Rahul Gandhi joined them on Monday evening, promising justice and today it was the turn of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal, however, admitted that he was late at the protests. "I should have come on day one. Fight for Nido is our fight as well. However it should be noted that we had called for magisterial inquiry on day one. I even said that Delhi police can't do an independent inquiry in Nido's case, as they are a party in the case," he told the crowd.

"Magisterial inquiry will be over in three to four weeks. We will know the truth about how Nido died and what exactly happened," he assured the protesters. He also suggested that history of northeast people should be included in the syllabus for students in Delhi so as to increase social harmony.

But for the protesters, the agenda is much more than justice for Nido. The biggest demand is for a stronger anti-racism law in India. Yeshi Wangchuk, Vice-President of the Arunachal Students Union says, the protest is about getting a change where social outlook towards North Eastern people is concerned.

"We want change at the judicial and constitutional level. India doesn't have a law to deal with racial discrimination. We want a strict law to deal with such instances. We are hoping that such a law will be introduced in the upcoming session of Parliament on 5th February. We are protesting for this law," he points out.

"It's good that we are getting political support. Students from Northeast including myself met Kejriwal to get more support. However social change is also needed. Finally it all boils down to racial discrimination," he says.

D Apao, from the North East Community group, who also met Kejriwal at his residence on Saturday, along with other students, points out that the racism can't be ignored any longer.

"Police personnel won't even register my complaint for a lost mobile. We are treated like second-class citizens in this country. Why should we stand for it? As part of our demand to the Delhi government, we want a fast-track court to deal with Nido's case," he says.

As far as Nido's case is concerned, Yeshi says the government has to take action against the police as well. "The SHO and the constable should be suspended. There are videos showing that they were the ones who dropped Nido back to the same place. Nido was made to sign a compromise letter saying he's medically fine. It was their duty to at least get him checked by a doctor," he points out.

"The FIR was lodged on 31 January and that also only after we put pressure on the police to register the FIR. There's a gap of days from the incidents to when the FIR was lodged," says Yeshi.

What happened to Nido is just an extreme example of how the Northeast community is discriminated against in Delhi on an everyday basis.

Naomi, a Manipuri student at Deshbandhu College, narrates one particular instance of being made to feel an outsider. "I wanted to get my prepaid SIM into postpaid. Initially they told me that it will done free of cost. Then I was told, that I will have to pay an extra fee because the option is only for Indians. Why are we not treated equally in the same country?" she asks.

Another student from Manipur, Kimrose recounts how she was teased as 'chinky'. "Where I lived, some people would keep teasing me, calling me chinky, chinky. I used to ignore but then I finally got upset and threatened to complain to the police. They weren't afraid of that either," she recalls.

Sirsa Kharay, feels that this is a particular problem for Delhi. "Delhi is the worse when it comes to this racial discrimination. My friends from North East don't face so many issues in South India. Here people have this cultural, casteist concept and they see us as outsiders and treat us badly. Landlords have problems with food, girls should not come, there's a problem with music," he points out.

"I've been here for 11 years and this has always been a big issue. We aren't here today because Nido was the son of an MLA or anything like that. We are here because we see him as our brother. Let's see, I'm hopeful that some change will come from these protests," he says.

For the protesters, the issue is clearly bigger than just Nido's death. When it comes to everyday racism, it is evident that it can't be done away with a just law.

Op Bluestar: India says it has ‘noted’ report by Britain

New Delhi: India today said it has "noted" the report and the statement made by the UK government that British assistance to India in planning Operation Bluestar to flush out militants from the Golden Temple in 1984 was "purely advisory" and "limited".

"The UK government has kept the Indian government informed on this matter and has also just shared the outcome of the UK government's enquiry with us. We have noted the report and the statement made," the Spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry said here.

Presenting a report before the British Parliament, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague today said British military's role in the 1984 Operation Bluestar to flush out militants from the Golden Temple was "limited" and "purely advisory".

Hague said the UK played no role in the actual operation that took place at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

In a statement on the conclusion of an inquiry into alleged British assistance provided by then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Hague said, "The report concludes that the nature of the UK's assistance was purely advisory, limited and provided to the Indian government at an early stage in their planning."

An analysis of nearly 200 files and 23,000 documents has confirmed that a "single British military adviser" travelled to India between February 8 and 19, 1984, to advice Indian intelligence services on contingency plans that they were drawing up for operations against the armed dissidents in the temple complex, including ground reconnaissance of the site.

The probe was ordered by Prime Minister David Cameron after documents released under a 30-year declassification rule stated that an officer of the elite Special Air Service travelled to Delhi and advised the Indian government as it framed plans for removing the militants in February 1984. The information evoked a sharp reaction by some Sikh bodies in India and abroad.

Modi’s helicopter denied permission to land, BJP cries foul

Kolkata: Ahead of Narendra Modi's public rally here, BJP today said permission has been denied at the last minute by the army for landing his helicopter at the Race Course ground in the city and alleged a "conspiracy" by the Centre.

"Modiji will arrive here to address a rally at the Brigade Parade Ground tomorrow, but the army has denied permission for his helicopter to land at the race course around," West Bengal BJP President Rahul Sinha told reporters here.

He said that according to the army, the race course ground could only be used by the President or Prime Minister and not a political person.

"If they had told us two or three days ago, then we could have made other arrangements. The central government is playing dirty and cheap politics," he alleged.

Sinha said that it had been planned to bring the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate by helicopter from the NSC Bose International Airport to avoid traffic snarls.

"But permission was denied at the last moment. It is a conspiracy by the UPA government," he alleged. Sinha said that Gujarat government had written to the army authorities seeking permission for Modi's helicopter to land at the race course ground. He said that a formal request was sent to the army authorities by the Gujarat government.

"After the Gujarat CMO sent an official request they turned it down. We had asked for a written declaration, but they didn't give us any such thing till now," Sinha said. The army spokesperson here could not be contacted despite several attempts.

Sinha also criticised the state government for alleged non-cooperation with Gujarat security officials. "Both the state and the Centre are not cooperating with us. The state government has not made any arrangements for food and accommodation for the NSG and Gujarat officials who have come here for security arrangements. Is this the way things should function?" asked Sinha.

Despite protests from Seemandhra, GoM clears draft Telangana bill

New Delhi: Notwithstanding Andhra Pradesh Assembly's rejection of Telangana bill, a Group of Ministers today cleared the draft legislation to be placed before the Union Cabinet on Thursday to pave the way for its tabling in Parliament.

"The GoM has cleared the draft Telangana Bill. It will be placed before the Union Cabinet in the next meeting. The Bill will be tabled in Parliament," Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is a member of the GoM, told reporters here after a 30-minute meeting of the ministerial panel.

Highly-placed sources said the GoM, headed by Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, has approved the Bill after some technical and procedural changes. A comprehensive Bill will be brought before the Union Cabinet and suggestions will be incorporated after discussions in the Cabinet.

Following the Union Cabinet's nod, the legislation will be sent to the President for his approval before being taken up by Parliament, probably next week.

A special economic package with substantial additional funds for construction of a new capital for Seemandhra region will be part of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill.

The move comes days after the Andhra Pradesh Assembly rejected the Telangana Bill by voice vote, capping weeks of acrimonious drama and embarrassing Congress, which favoured creation of the separate state.

Experts are of the opinion that despite the Assembly's rejection of the bill, Parliament can go ahead with its legislative process for creation of the new state.

Parliament session commences tomorrow and is scheduled to conclude on 21 February. This will be the last session before the tenure of the UPA-II comes to an end.

Politics of tamasha: Why call just AAP ‘pathological liars’?

Members of the AAP staged a protest against Arun Jaitley in Delhi and the BJP workers staged a counter protest in response. That's good entertainment. It's time we learnt to separate political antics from genuine political action – that's something of a rarity these days, one must admit.

The trigger for the action from both sides was the allegation by one AAP leader that senior BJP leaders sought to bribe him. In a climate saturated with irony, the phenomenon of allegations merits some discussion (as this piece is being written party's senior member Prashant Bhushan is on air making an allegation against DMK chief Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi).

Wild allegations and spurious claims of achievement are accepted, almost legitimate, instruments of perception manipulation in the country. Politicians have always used the media to spread malice and misinformation, and for character assassination. The latter, for all that moral grandstanding and claims of piercing intelligence, have unfailingly become the willing accomplice. Thus there's hardly any point slamming the AAP for claiming in public that Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitely offered Rs 20 crore to break the party. It has learnt the media game fast and at the moment appears to have upstaged even Modi, the old master of the game.

Arvind Kejriwal addressing the media. AFP.

Arvind Kejriwal addressing the media. AFP.

The AAP leaders won't produce proof. None would be sought from them with seriousness and the judiciary won't come into the picture. In times so welcoming to the sensational and the scurrilous, proofs are a distraction. Even if they produce sheaves of paper as evidence there's fat chance that anybody would be too interested.

Throwing allegations to catch public attention has been perfected almost to an art form in the country. Established parties have been doing it for decades. The AAP is only doing it with higher frequency. It threatens to take the shock quotient out of the allegations. But that is another matter.

Should anyone really be blaming the AAP for what it is doing? Everyone was applauding its leaders for hurling allegations at everyone in their anti-corruption movement days. All of them were happy to dance to their tune, adding some music of their own to make the revelry last longer. Nobody asked for evidence then; there's no reason why they should be asked to do so now. It is obvious by now that the Kejriwal-led outfit wants to paint all leaders in black and make a media tamasha of it. It is good strategy so far as occupying media space goes. Liars? The answer, in the absence of evidence, should be 'who is not?'

Someone said Indians are born with the 'credulity chromosome', meaning they would believe anything told to them loudly and with a bit of earnestness. They are also suckers for good stories. If lies are made interesting, they would fall hook, line and sinker for it. The phenomenon of Narendra Modi is an example. He has been moving around the country, making exaggerated claims and hurling allegations at political opponents with little respect for facts. He is a good story-teller. Not many blame him for telling 'lies'. There is little point pulling up the AAP for making allegations. Do we ever hear enough about defamation laws in out everyday discourse? No.

In an overall system that appreciates falsehood, or at least is indifferent about it, the new party is not an exception. The only difference: it is more brazen, and being a new outfit, does not carry the burden of a dubious legacy that other parties do. Being an outsider, it can afford to be disrespectful to big leaders. The allegations serve no purpose, but they certainly take the halo of respectability off the latter. It is not such a bad thing when there are no indications that the political class are planning to change for the better.

SP, BJP slams Beni for distributing gifts at steel council meet

Lucknow: Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma today came under attack from SP and BJP for making Congress activists and journalists members of Steel Consumers' Council, and distributing cash and gifts to them at its meeting.
More than 1,000 members were given cash, mobile and a trolley bag each at the 24th meeting of the Council held in
Lucknow yesterday, and over Rs 1 crore were spent on it, sources said.

The beneficiaries included Congress workers from Verma's home district Barabanki, his constituency Gonda and local journalists who have been made members of the Council with the tenure till March 31, 2014, the sources said.

Condemning the act, BJP chief spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak demanded a high-level probe into the entire matter. "We demand a high-level probe into the matter. The expense on the entire programme, beneficiaries of the cash and other gifts including mobile should be made public," Pathak said.

"Why this gift was distribute should also be cleared by the minister," he said. Samajwadi Party leader Om Prakash Singh said that it was unfortunate that a central minister was involved in such an act. "If he (Beni) thinks he could win hearts of people by distributing money and gifts, he is wrong," Singh said.

Another SP leader, Ram Ashrey Vishwakarma, claimed that the act "amounts to corruption" and the Election Commission or higher authorities should probe the misuse. Chairman of Congress's communication cell Satyadev
Tripathi, however, said whatever gifts or TA/DA was given were as per the rules.

"SP and BJP men did not know about this and are making mountain out of a molehill... The Navratna companies give
TA/DA and gifts in their meetings to delegates and this is routine. Yesterday was the AGM of Steel Consumers'  Council and whatever was given must be as per rules," Tripathi added.

Madhya Pradesh: Cong wants CBI inquiry in recruitment scam

New Delhi: Congress today demanded CBI inquiry into the alleged recruitment and admission "scam" in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh.

"Not only 'Munnabhai MBBS' (a reference to fake doctors) are coming to fore in Madhya Pradesh. There are also Munnabhai teachers, Munnabhai policemen and Munnabhais in transport department. The scam in Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (VYAPAM) is not confined to Pre Medical Tests," the newly-appointed CLP leader of Madhya Pradesh Satyadev Katare said.

Representational image. Ibnlive

Representational image. Ibnlive

Levelling serious allegations of corruption against BJP leaders in Shivraj Singh Chouhan cabinet, Congress that the admission and recruitment scam gripping VYAPAM is spread out in other states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as well and hence an inquiry by the Special Task Force of the state won't suffice.

"When INLD chief Omprakash Chautala can go to jail in a similar case, then why not (Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister) Shivraj Singh Chouhan," said Katare, who was addressing a press conference at AICC with PCC chief Arun Yadav.

The leaders claimed that though VYAPAM existed for a long time, the scams happened during Chouhan's tenure.

"There are huge irregularities being reported during Chouhan's tenure," Katare said alleging that the "caucus of IAS and IPS officers" have used the institution to "manage" degrees and jobs.

"Former state minister Laxmikant Sharma was absconding till some time back. When the name of former BJP Chief Minister Uma Bharti came and she threatened and the DGP of the state called on her to assure her.

"If Chouhan and Bharti have no hand in the scam, what is the problem in a CBI probe? Since the scam is spread to states outside Madhya Pradesh also, a inquiry by STF alone will not do," Katare said. The AICC also released a bunch of documents detailing the alleged role and conduct of the Chief Minister and senior officers of the state.

silver articles weighing 1,116 kg. The silver articles were entrusted to V Baskaran, who was Jayalalithaa's secretary and consultant in 1996, after the investigating agency took the seized gold and diamond in its custody and produced before the Special Court in Chennai in 1998, the SPP had said.

Baskaran had given a letter of undertaking on December 12, 1996, that he would keep the items in his custody and produce them before the court whenever required, Singh had stated.

Anbazhagan, in his objection, said the SPP has filed the petition inspite of being fully aware of the death of Baskaran. "Baskaran died on December 3 last year and Singh in collusion with Jayalalithaa is trying to suppress facts to prolong the case," he said.

On December 12 last year, the court had ordered the transit of the seized material by December 21, stating it was required for giving fair justice. A plea in this regard was filed by Anbazhagan before the court.

In his application, Anbazhagan had pleaded that the court take custody of 800 kg silver, 28 kg gold, 750 pairs of shoes, 10,500 sarees, 91 watches and other items seized in a raid in 1997 as evidence. Special Court Judge, John Michael D'Cunha, posted the matter to February six.

2G scam: AAP produces recordings, alleges Karunanidhi’s complicity

AAP leader Prashant Bhushan today said that the AAP is in possession of a series of recorded telephonic conversations that implicate DMK leader Karunanidhi and his daughter Kanimozhi further in the 2G scam. Kanimozhi, a DMK MP, is already an accused in the case filed by the CBI and is presently out on bail.

Bhushan added that the latest 'evidence' in AAP's possession showed that the DMK leader's role in the scam needed to be probed further.

"There are conversations between Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi's PA and Jafer Sayed an IPS officer close to the family. This conversation shows that Karunanidhi was completely aware of the dealings taking place," Bhushan said.

The AAP said there were dubious land deals and other deals that indicated murky dealings between the DMK leader and industrial houses.

"The tapes were recorded on a mobile phone. We can't say who has leaked the tapes. There is talk in the tapes even of kickbacks from a power plant going to the accused. We have verified with people who know the persons in the tapes and they verified the voices", he added.

Bhushan made the allegations during a press conference at the Constitution Club. The charges are against Kalaignar TV, which is considered a channel run by the DMK.

The payment of alleged kickbacks to Kalaignar TV is why Kanimozhi, the daughter of DMK supremo Karunanidhi was arrested.

Live: Is AAP raking up 2G to bring corruption to the fore again?

4.18 pm: We have telephone conversations that implicate Kanimozhi: Bhushan

Prashant Bhushan continues, saying that they are in possession of a series of recorded telephonic conversations that implicate DMK leader Kanimozhi further in the 2G scam.

"The tapes were recorded on a mobile phone. We can't say who has leaked the tapes. There is talk in the tapes even of kickbacks from a power plant going to the accused. We have verified with people who know the persons in the tapes and they verified the voices", he added.

Bhushan added that the latest 'evidence' in AAP's possession showed that the DMK leader's role in the scam needed to be probed further.

Why he is targeting Karunanidhi in particular is not very clear, especially given that the DMK is unlikely to play a very significant role in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

However AAP is probably trying to bring the 2G issue back into the public spotlight - given that it was the sheer scale of this scam that prompted the outpouring of anger against corruption in the government.

In many ways it was the anger prompted by 2G - along with many other scams - that saw the birth of the India Against Corruption movement - the precursor to the Jan Lokpal movement and AAP itself.

Given that sentiment against AAP is not all roses right now, perhaps the party has decided that the way to go is remind people just how bad the 2G scam is. Public memory is as we all know, notoriously short.

4.06 pm: Prashan Bhushan makes fresh charges against Kaliagnar tv in 2G scam

Prashant Bhushan is addressing the press conference at the constitution club.

The charge perse seems to be against Kalaignar TV. For those who need a quick refresher - Kalaignar TV is owned by the DMK, and its alleged involvement in the 2G scam is why Kanimozhi, the daughter of DMK supremo Karunanidhi, served a jail sentence in Tihar, Delhi.

"There are conversations between Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi's PA and Jafer Sayed an IPS officer close to the family. This conversation shows that Karunanidhi was completely aware of the dealings taking place", alleged Bhushan.

4.00 pm: AAP promises to expose 'new material' on 2G Spectrum scam

The Aam Aadmi Party has said that it will expose 'new material' in relation to the 2G spectrum scam.  In an invite to the media, AAP said that the new material will show the 'deep involvement of some of the important political players, themselves involved in the scam, in covering it up'.

No other details were immediately available, and it is unclear who AAP intends on targeting.

The new allegations come on the back of a sensational press conference yesterday, in which AAP MLA Madan Lal accused Arun Jaitley, Narendra Modi and the BJP of offering him money to back rebel MLA Vinod Kumar Binny and topple AAP's Delhi government.

Although Lal could not provide the media with any evidence to back his claims, it led to a group of AAP party workers to converge on the BJP leaders Delhi residence, which later led to a bizarre protest face off between BJP and AAP workers.

Jaitley went on to call AAP a party of 'pathological liars' and party leader Nirmala Sitharaman said that the party's idea of 'alternative politics' was gaining 'publicity at any cost'.

People looking for viable alternative to Cong, BJP: Yechury

Chandigarh: As efforts to forge a non-BJP, non-Congress front before the Lok Sabha polls gain momentum, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury today said people are looking for a viable alternative which has policies to provide them relief and not a one cobbled up just for ensuring majority.

"What we have been saying all along is that people are looking for relief. They want relief from burdens that are being imposed on them.

Sitaram Yechury. AFP

Sitaram Yechury. AFP

"They are disgusted in the manner in which public resources are being looted, they are fed up with rampant corruption. They are looking for an alternative...," Yechury told PTI on the sidelines of a party function here.

"What we believe is people want that kind of alternative that will follow policies that will provide them relief. So, an alternative merely to cobble up majority is not what people want," he asserted.

When asked if he saw emergence of AAP, which people of Delhi had voted as an alternative, as a threat to them, he said such an alternative which does not make its stand clear on crucial policies may run only for some time.

"So far they (AAP) are not clear on policies. Okay, they are against corruption, which is our fight too," he said, claiming the AAP does not have a clear stand on several issues including economic policies being followed in this country and on communalism.

On AAP accusing BJP leaders Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitley of trying to topple the Kejriwal government in Delhi, Yechury said the party is in power in Delhi, with the state government having its own intelligence apparatus and they can probe the whole the issue.

Though BJP has dismissed the speculation on the emergence of a Third Front, Yechury said that coming together of various non-BJP, non-Congress outfits was going to have "very good impact".

The AIADMK yesterday worked out an alliance with CPI(M) to fight the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.

"It is going to have a very good impact.... This sort of coming together of various non-BJP, non-Congress political parties, which are mainly regional parties, but very powerful in their regions as they are heading the state governments there, is good," Yechury said.

When asked why efforts to form such fronts are made close to the elections, Yechruy felt that there was nothing wrong in this.

"If we have to change policies in this country, it will depend on who forms the next government," he said.

On the forthcoming Parliament session, he felt that 12 days of work would not be able to do justice to the 39 legislations.

"We have 39 legislations, with 12 days of work. It is impossible. We told the government that you choose those which are priority, we will debate and we will fully cooperate on these," he said.

Referring to the Telangana issue, Yechury felt that disruptions in Parliament proceedings are bound to happen, with ruling Congress leaders supporting as well as opposing the formation of Telangana.

"This problem Congress will have to solve. First let them set their own house in order, how will this session run. Their people will run towards the Well (on Telangana) and disrupt the proceedings," he said.

On tomorrow's meeting of leaders of Parliamentary Parties of various non-Congress, non-BJP in Parliament, he said since the Parliament session will be the last before the April-May Lok Sabha polls, effort will be to ensure that all pending legislations for peoples welfare are prioritised and passed.

Asked about their strategy in Punjab for the Lok Sabha polls, he said they have a tie-up with Manpreet Singh Badal led People's Party of Punjab and they can have understanding with like-mined outfits.

Senior CPM leader Nilotpal Basu and party's state leaders from Punjab and Haryana took part in the function.

Will create Telangana under any circumstances: PM tells TRS

New Delhi: Amid uncertainty over the bill on Telangana, TRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao on Tuesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press for passage of the legislation for creation of the new state and said he got an assurance on the issue.

"He (PM) said the government is seriously committed and we are under any circumstances creating the Telangana state," he told reporters here after meeting the Prime Minister at his residence.

The TRS supremo, accompanied by a delegation of party leaders, also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister consisting of nine demands.

According to it, Telangana would face considerable power shortage after its formation. To bridge the gap, NTPC should establish a 4000 mega watt power plant in the region.

Adequate natural gas should also be alloted for setting up of 1400 mega watt plant at Shankerpally to meet burgeoning needs of Hyderabad, it said.

TRS also sought setting up of a high court, IIM, and an AIIMS branch in Telangana.

The memorandum said that the debates that have taken place regarding the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, 2013 in both the Houses of the state legislature have deepened the divide further.

"In such a conflicting scenario various aspects of the bill dealing with the Legislative Assembly, High Court, power sector and higher education need a surgical treatment. This is essential for healthy evolution of Telangana polity," the memorandum added.

AAP a party of pathological liars, says an angry Arun Jaitley

New Delhi: BJP leader Arun Jaitley hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday, calling them a bunch of 'pathological liars' even as party workers belonging to both AAP and BJP engaged in a bizarre protest face off.

Scores of AAP workers on Tuesday staged a protest outside Jaitley's residence in Kailash Colony, a day after AAP accused Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitley of trying to topple the Delhi government.

BJP activists soon launched a counter-protest at the same spot, alleging that AAP was just protesting with an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In addition to calling AAP a party of 'pathological liars', Jaitley tweeted on Monday, saying "Rubbish claims by AAP. AAP's alternative politics includes a fundamental right to falsehood and lies".

The sentiment was echoed by other BJP leaders. Party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman in particular lashed out at the party, saying that their idea of a 'political alternative' was nothing more than getting publicity at any cost, and slandering political opponents without any basis.

At Kailash colony meanwhile, as both parties protested at the same place, there were heated arguments between their workers.

Police, which had beefed up security outside Jaitley's house, had to divide them by putting barricades.

AAP had on Monday accused Modi and Jaitley of trying to topple the Kejriwal government, claiming that they are behind moves to lure MLAs to split the ruling party.

AAP MLA Madan Lal had alleged a person close to Modi had offered him Rs 20 crore to split the party and promised to make him Chief Minister if he could do so.

"Two persons met me around 10-12 day ago. One of them told me that his name is Sanjoy Singh and he has come from Gujarat. He said he is close to Narendra Modi. Singh told me that Modiji wanted me to get the support of around 10 (AAP) MLAs," he had said without producing any proof to substantiate the allegations.

The Kasturba Nagar MLA had alleged that the person told him that if he succeeded in getting 10 MLAs to leave AAP, then he would be made the CM and his cabinet ministers would be paid Rs 10 crore each.

Lal had also claimed that on midnight of 7 December, an unidentified person had telephoned him, saying a prominent leader wanted to talk to him.

"When I asked him who wanted to talk to me, he said Arun Jaitley. After hearing Jaitley's name, I cut the phone. I could not make a call back on the unknown number," he had said.

What AAP is upto: Encashing its goodwill cheque before expiry

The allegations made by an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA, Madan Lal, that he was approached by BJP leaders to break his party for a price make no sense. Unless one views them in the context of AAP's own strategy of positioning itself as the victim of a conspiracy hatched by the Big Two (BJP and Congress), thus setting the stage for an early re-election in Delhi.

AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal. PTI

AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal. PTI

On Monday, the party opened two fronts by targeting both the BJP and the Congress. Big names were mentioned from both parties, with wild allegations being made against Arun Jaitley, Harsh Vardhan and Narendra Modi, and former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit being named for alleged wrongdoings in regularising illegal colonies.

For the BJP which is trying to win big at the centre, it makes absolutely no sense to try and break AAP at this juncture when it has the political high ground and AAP itself is doing all it can to shoot itself in the foot. For AAP to target Dikshit for regularising illegal colonies makes even less sense, for AAP is planning to do the same thing (legalise illegal colonies).  It can't pretend to be holier than thou in this political game.

Then what is AAP really up to?

To understand what AAP is trying to do, one has to understand its predicament and its assessment of evolving political trends. It has apparently been rattled by recent opinion polls that do not give it much of a chance outside Delhi, while in Delhi itself its fortunes may be dwindling in some segments of the voter base which brought it to power. It has lost public image with segments of the middle and upper middle class. After Arvind Kejriwal's disastrous dharna in support of suspending four cops and Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti's much-criticised vigilantism where the victims were African women, the upper sections of Delhi's middle classes are not amused.

This has forced Kejriwal & Co to focus sharply on the larger voter constituency of the emerging middle classes – which includes everyone from jhuggi dwellers to auto rickshaw drivers, who are not status-quoist. But even this constituency is not going to stay with AAP if there is no delivery or results. The free water and cheap power schemes are not that important for this constituency.

The problem for Kejriwal is that he can't deliver results with 27 MLAs (one has been expelled from his initial 28) and with fickle Congress support. This makes it important for AAP to precipitate an election in May along with the Lok Sabha polls in the hope that it will get a majority on its own.

If we understand this perspective, all of AAP's contortions make sense. AAP's actions are intended to achieve the following:

First, it wants to position itself as the only honest party in a sea of crooked ones, and especially Congress and BJP. This involves making wild allegations against both and hoping that Congress will pull support and help AAP achieve martyrdom. It is also intended to provoke the BJP so that it acts like a big bully and make AAP appear like a poor victim. This is the real purpose of Monday's press conference by Madan Lal, et al, that took on both BJP and Congress.

Second, AAP wants to stay in the limelight so that its lower middle class constituency is told repeatedly that it is fighting powerful forces despite meagre resources. This explains why AAP keeps targeting the media for unfavourable coverage. This plays well with the underprivileged who anyway have little love lost for the media. This is disingenuous, for the media has been as tough on BJP and Congress or AAP – but in the short-term this allegation of media bias forces the latter to give AAP extra attention to prove it is not biased. This is sound psychology on AAP's part.

Third, AAP knows it has mounted the tiger of expectations and unmounting it can be fatal. This is why focusing on delivering governance in Delhi is not a priority. It wants to encash its goodwill outside Delhi before it diminishes in the face of actual performance reality in Delhi. AAP knows that parties which rise suddenly can collapse suddenly too – hence the hurry to cash in. Goodwill cheques cannot be long-term validity.

Fourth, AAP knows that the two ends of the middle class are falling apart because Narendra Modi offers the lure of stability and growth to the upper end of this spectrum. The initial attraction of AAP to the upper classes is fading, as is evident from falling donations to AAP after the Delhi dharna of Kejriwal, but the attraction is not entirely gone. Hence it has to do two things quickly: bring in more known and clean faces to shore up its own image, and also precipitate an election fast, so that the people it is trying to attract will give it the benefit of doubt.

A Hindustan Times story today says AAP is trying to rope in former CAG Vinod Rai, and former Election Commission Chief SY Quraishi, but so far with little success. Both names would be a coup, but AAP knows that its hold on the intelligentsia is slipping. A few days ago, former Indian Ambassador Madhu Bhaduri (an AAP founder) said she was distancing herself from the party due to its anti-women position. Former Air Deccan promoter GR Gopinath has been openly critical of the party's anarchist tendencies.

AAP does not have time to build its reputation – but is hoping that giving the electorate very little time to make up its mind will be beneficial. This is why it wants to expand its reach outside Delhi and Haryana to all states in the hope that elsewhere its clean reputation will hold better than its Delhi performance.

Court has given its verdict, Chandrababu Naidu says of Modi

His Telugu Desam Party is keeping its cards as close to its chest as its leader Chandrababu Naidu is, but the latter has now ventured to say that there is "goodwill" for the BJP's prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi and that this cannot be denied.

In an interview to The Indian Express, Naidu has said, when asked about Modi's culpability in the violence in Gujarat in 2002, "The court has given its verdict."

Asked if he gives a clean chit to Modi, the former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh said Modi has said he wants to focus on develoment.

Having shared a stage with Modi, a tie-up with Modi is not to be ruled out, he said. "All things are possible," he is quoted as having said.

The TDP, as per the results of various pre-poll surveys, is expected to put up a good show in the coming Lok Sabha election and Naidu could well emerge as one of a handful of king-makers in the eventuality of a fractured mandate. Asked pointedly if he will go with the BJP, he is quoted as saying he will take the decision "at an appropriate time".

Congress – BJP face off over Lokpal, but AAP could be the winner

The BJP and Congress locking horns over the selection, not of the Lokpal, but of the fifth member of the panel that will identify India's first Lokpal does not augur well for the implementation of what may prove to be a historic piece of legislation.

The UPA, doubtless, would like to push through the appointment of a Lokpal before the Lok Sabha polls. For a government facing crippling anti-incumbency over its apparent inaction and alleged participation in multiple scams running into hundreds of crores, appointing a Lokpal can hardly alter its legacy but the symbolism will be lost on nobody. If anything, the Congress-led UPA would, or should, want to grab this opportunity to prove it can establish genuine dialogue with the Opposition on the constitution of the search committee.

Reuters

A protest for the Jan Lokpal Bill. File photo by Reuters

Instead, the setting up of the Lokpal Selection Committee has hit a roadblock with the Congress and BJP unable to see eye to eye on the appointment of the fifth member to the panel. The Congress, instead of playing a winning card by offering complete transparency in its nomination to the fifth spot, has bungled once again with a shortlist doing the rounds, only to be followed by a different shortlist released subsequently, fuelling speculation that the selection of the panel, and eventually of the person who will assume the office of the Lokpal, will be another self-serving political maneouvre.

Not only is the dispute threatening to turn ugly -- the BJP has threatened to take the matter to the President of India just ahead of another Parliament sesssion that will see as much acrimony and protests as the previous, mostly futile sessions of this Lok Sabha -- but the Congress leaders' lack of presence of mind will only throw more weight behind the Aam Aadmi Party's allegation that the UPA remains as intractable as ever on actually fighting corruption.

The AAP government in Delhi appears set to pass a Jan Lokpal Bill, its version of the Uttarakhand Lokayukta Act considered one of the strongest anti-corruption measures by a state government. With everybody from a peon to the chief minister of Delhi set to fall under the ambit of the Delhi Lokayukta, the Aam Aadmi Party will claim another mini-victory, as well as delivery on another poll promise.

No prizes for guessing that the Jan Lokpal Bill, which the AAP government is hoping to pass without heeding the law department's view that it must be vetted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to check for consonance with the Central law on the same subject, is a few steps ahead of the latter in terms of who it covers, what punishment it proposes, etc.

Between the AAP government's apparent will to pass its bill despite anticipated opposition from the Congress and the Congress's lack of foresight on implementing the Central law, the Congress is clearly the loser.

According to the law, the selection committee will comprise the prime minister, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, a nominee of the Chief Justice of India (or the CJI himself) and a fifth member who is to be an eminent jurist, who is to be picked by the other four by consensus.

The name of the fourth member emerged last week with Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam nominating senior SC judge Justice HL Dattu.

The selection of the fifth member has emerged as a contentious issue with BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, also Leader of the Opposition in the LS and in that capacity a member of the selection panel, stating that PP Rao, a senior Supreme Court lawyer who the UPA appears to be backing, is a Congress loyalist. Swaraj said Rao had fought several cases in Supreme Court for the Centre and could therefore be partisan. BJP leaders have instead proposed the names of Harish Salve and K Parasaran, said reports.

The UPA had earlier shortlisted six senior lawyers for the fifth position on the selection committee. These included Soli Sorabjee, Fali S Nariman, K Parasaran, KK Venugopal, Harish Salve and A-G G E Vahanvati. The list, however, was later amended to retain Parasaran and Nariman's names, with the addition of PP Rao, Prof Upendra Baxi, Prof N R Madhava Menon, Prof Mohan Gopal and KN Chandrashekharan Pillai.

Now Modi is ahead of BJP, the Sangh: Digvijaya Singh

Indore: Taking a jibe at BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh has said that his (Modi's) stature was now ahead of his own party and the RSS.

Dubbing Modi as a political leader of "hard core communalist ideology," Digvijaya said "now Modi is ahead of the BJP and the Sangh."

He was talking to reporters last night when he had come to attend a marriage function here.

Singh also rapped the BJP over Gujarat government's Rs 10.80 per day income norm for Below Poverty Line (BPL) card
holders.

"When the Planning Commission had fixed such a standard, the BJP had raised a hue and cry," he said, adding that BJP president Rajnath Singh should reply over Gujarat government now setting a standard for defining poverty.

Alleging that Modi was a political leader of "hard-core communalist ideology," he claimed that the BJP's prime ministerial nominee had honoured those accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots.

Singh also claimed that 60 percent of the posts in favour of Modi on social networking sites were "fake."

Brinda terms Mamata regime ‘tyrant’

Ranchi: CPM polit bureau member Brinda Karat today described as 'tyranny' the abrupt cancellation of the release of a book on atrocities against women written by eminent feminist Jasodhara Bagchi in the Kolkata Book Fair.

Nari Nirjantan Pratirodh Mancha (Forum against the Oppression of Women) had planned the release of the Bengali book Parajayee Nari on Monday but the Book Fair authorities cancelled it claiming that it has political connotations.

"It's undemocratic.... The unfortunate incident clearly shows that the Mamata Banerjee regime in West Bengal is tyrant. It is condemnable to gag intellectuals," Brinda told reporters in Ranchi.

It was the first time in the history of West Bengal that such 'censorship' had taken place, she claimed.

Brinda, however, did not equate the incident with the similar situations faced by writers Taslima Nasreen and Salman Rushdie several times.

"I will not compare it (with other incidents)," she said.

Taslima Nasreen's book release was cancelled by the book fair authorities in 2012 following protest by Muslim fundamentalists, while Rushdie's video-chat was cancelled by the Jaipur Literature Festival authorities the same year.

Referring to the recent rape incidents in West Bengal, Brinda said, "There is a sense of insecurity among the women in the state. Given a free and fair elections, the people would vote out the Trinamool Congress."

Mamata banning book on atrocities against women tyrannical: Brinda Karat

Ranchi: CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat today described as 'tyranny' the abrupt cancellation of the release of a book on atrocities against women written by eminent feminist Jasodhara Bagchi in the Kolkata Book Fair.

"Nari Nirjantan Pratirodh Mancha" (Forum against the Oppression of Women) had planned the release of the Bengali book "Parajayee Nari" yesterday but the Book Fair authorities cancelled it claiming that it has political connotations.

"It's undemocratic.... The unfortunate incident clearly shows that the Mamata Banerjee regime in West Bengal is tyrant. It is condemnable to gag intellectuals," Brinda told reporters here.

It was the first time in the history of West Bengal that such 'censorship' had taken place, she claimed.

Brinda, however, did not equate the incident with the similar situations faced by writers Taslima Nasreen and Salman Rushdie several times.

"I will not compare it (with other incidents)," she added.
