Rahul effect? Gujarat Congress suspends 23 absentee leaders

Two days after Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's interview in which he emphasised his role in restructuring the party and changing the 'system', the party started cracking down on members who have been skipping state level meetings.

The Gujarat Congress on Wednesday removed 23 members of its state executive including a vice-president and two general secretaries, because they had skipped two meetings in a row without obtaining prior permission.

State Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi in a statement said, "National vice president Rahul Gandhi has directed us to organize state, district and block-level office bearer meetings every month with prior notice and remove from party positions, those who remain absent from meetings without prior permission twice in a row."

Meanwhile state Congress workers told PTI that all meetings had been held after duly informing all members.

"But office-bearers started remaining absent from these meetings without taking prior permission. In our last meeting on 24 January, state Congress leader Gurudas Kamat directed us to take action against those who are remaining absent," they said.

The 23 leaders who were duly removed from their posts include four permanent invitees, one vice-president, two general secretaries, two executive committee members, three special invitees and 11 district incharges," a release issued by state Congress said.

However, Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi refused to give the names of any of the 23 members. This is widely being seen as a move to avoid further defections to the BJP.

This is a major crackdown on indiscipline in the state Congress unit in the recent times, party sources said.
