Modi doesn’t have social acceptance to run a stable govt: Milind Deora

Taking on BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, the Union Minister of State for Communication and Technology Milind Deora today said that he doesn't have the social acceptance to run a stable government.

"The way the main opposition party is projecting the person as its prime ministerial candidate people assume that he can bring economic growth, but the opposition is distorting the very critical fact that is political stability. In our country, political stability means social acceptance. If you don't have the social acceptance within your party or in coalition partners, you can't run a government," said Deora.

He was speaking at an interactive meeting organised by the Indian Merchants' Association on Congress Party's Vision for Economic Policy for 2014 on Thursday evening.

Deora added that the UPA government was committed towards India's growth and intended to put emphasis on the manufacturing sector in the coming years. "A stable government like UPA at the Center would ensure a continuation in the Indian growth," he said.

He further added that a new paradigm in governance has unfolded in the last couple of years. "The onslaught of 24/7 news channels and social media revolution have contributed in changing the governance paradigm. In the long run, these are good things as it will improve transparency," he added stating that UPA has been the government of the day while this new governance paradigm was unfolding.

Responding to a question over the Congress fielding former chief minister Ashok Chavan from the Nanded Lok Sabha constituency, he said that there should be a consensus among all political parties. "We respect the Supreme Court judgment on convicted politicians. But, there is a difference in accusation or allegations and conviction. There should be some consensus on giving tickets among all political parties," Deora said adding that the political parties, otherwise, will keep pointing fingers at each other over it.
