Pawar tells NCP workers to vote twice, may irk poll panel

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar may have ticked off the Election Commission today when he told his supporters in Mumbai to vote twice for the party -- once each in Satara and in Mumbai. Pawar in fact went ahead to detail out the modus operandi -- wipe off the ink mark after the first vote and cast it again in the other constituency.

Although the NCP chief's words raised eyebrows, many considered it as a comment made in jest. The Election Commission is however unlikely to be amused by this light-hearted comment with the Model of Conduct in place and may ask Pawar to explain.

The NCP chief's address may also signal the desperation of the party to seek as many votes as possible as it is losing its prominence particularly in rural Maharashtra as recent opinion polls have indicated.

Electioneering in India has often seen politicians rubbing the Election Commission in the wrong shoulder with either unwarranted words or actions.
