E-governance could be solution to India’s problems: Modi

The BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday emphasised the growing importance of information technology  in nation building and urged those in the sector to address it.

"There is a great digital divide between rural and urban India. IT can address that. For instance long distance education can do wonders in the country," Modi said, addressing a Nasscom conference in Mumbai.

"One fourth of the nation was connected via internet but much needs to be done in terms of training in the electronic manpower, a must since IT is an enabler for change."

The Gujarat CM, in his address, also stressed on inclusive infrastructure and the power of software to give real benefits to the Indian citizen. "With IT we can track the healthcare and education progress of children," he said, adding that perhaps one of the greatest solutions to the problems India is facing could be e-governance.

Hitting out at the UPA government, Modi said current leaders are too busy confusing people instead of forming solutions to address economy's woes are confusing the nation.

"Good governance has become a very heavy subject today and because of bad governance we know what problems we are facing today. Unfortunately, we have leaders who instead  of providing solutions are further confusing the situation."

"Cyber security is a major issue... Our IT professionals are like soldiers who will protect India from a cyber threat... India must switch from hardware to utility. Why cant IT be used for democratic and participatory governance?"
